I really like the look of them. Not willing to spend that much money yet. Opening the headlights is not a job I would do. So, I would have to find a time to remove and send them in for modification. In addition, I would incur a cost for the actual retrofit. However, I really liked the LED lights on my Lexus IS.
 
Ya the price is definitely up there and I'm not really loving the fact that the letter "M" is projected onto the road. Not really sure why they would do that, other then shameless self promotion.
 
I think the biggest question here is if using this projector with an HID bulb will produce better results than the LED bulb.

that's a definite yes.. if youre going to blow this much money on projectors you should definitely go with HID's.. HID's still produce tons more light than LED bulbs can

It's not difficult to crack open... just takes some patience. These are literally screw in and then seal the housing back up.

I've done a few retros in the past with great results. You're right cracking headlights open is actually really straight forward. The challenge always is attaching the aftermarket projector onto the original mounting points. I've always had to fabricate a bracket which is a pain. Ill check with the retrofit source to see if they have any options for HID drop ins.
 
It seems to me after removing my hid h11 bulbs in favor of oem halogen aimed a bit higher, if we're looking for good light projection for highway use, we should consider putting hid projectors in the fog lights. They're below a standard cutoff height and as a result you can aim them almost flat. And get more light down range than even the best projector hid in the oem headlight aimed correctly. Especially lifted 4runners. The headlights are physically too high to aim below drivers eyes in cars but also aim up enough for longer distance. It's on my list of things to do at some point. The fogs are basically pointless for me anyway. I'd probably then put hid bulbs in the protectors and remove the cutoffs and wire them to operate in conjunction with the brights or with another switch for offroad only. No light bars! Better light. Seems like the best all around option to me if you're going to all the work of retrofit.

I've opened numerous OEM headlights, and without a doubt the factory 4runner lights were the worst I've ever seen. The sealant is like concrete which makes its near impossible to separate w/o damaging the housing. I got some aftermarket TYC lights and they come apart like butter due to the butyl rubber they use. Highly recommended for an extra couple hundred bucks.
 
I evaluated these carefully, and my choice is in my sig. This LED is very bright, brighter than HID, but the light is concentrated at the hotspot, and the width is not nearly as good. This is my 4th HID retrofit with Lightwerkz in 3 cars.

I'm not saying this LED is a bad choice, I just have my preference. See a pic of the foreground projected "M" before you buy these. IMO, it's cheesy. It can be taped over during the retrofit.

Cost-wise, as quality retrofit components go, these are in line. Want cheaper? Wait a couple years.

I think I remember seeing guys on a diff forum trying to crack open the lights would stick them in the oven for a while to soften the glue??

thats the normal way to do it. or a heat gun. some glues don't care about heat though. Just depends on what the manufacturer wanted to use. My OEM titan headlights were a PAIN to take apart but the second time i took them apart after using Morimoto butyl it was almost too easy.

I guess my experience is with Halogen housings, no projectors. so its easy....mini h1 literally slides through the hole for the bulb, tighten down the supplied nut, adjust/align, glue back together:blah:
