Finally Front Disco's That Work

Subbing for these will be ordering come tax return time. Just to confirm these work with the 4th gen?

Mike, I'll be hitting you up in the Spring, gotta get the rig ready for Moab.

But if you still need a 5th gen for that cb mount, let me know. Wasn't sure if Ammomac wanted to drive all the way from Como, I think I remember you saying you lived pretty close to me.

Sounds good. We can figure out a time to meet up for fitting when I have some time. After first of the year would be good.

I've been working on these with a member from the FJ Cruiser forum for the last month or so. He came to me with a design that had been available in Australia, but that company stopped making these.

The new front disconnects for the 4th, and 5th Gen's are now available. These will allow you to disconnect the front of your 4runners WITHOUT causing any damage to your CV's. Pull two pins and you're good to go.

Pictures are from an FJ Cruiser, but the 4runner's are the exact same.

Very cool for the non KDSSers! I've read that you have plenty of experience with these joints, which is great. Have you used this style of joint with similar loading? I've never estimated what anti-sway bar loads are (constant turn or asymmetric bump/dip shock), but I would general load spherical bearings/heims/rod ends radially with small axial loading to prevent the ball being pressed out (McMaster shows about 2200 lbs in a half inch size). Obviously this type of design would impede this type of disconnect with the new orientation and clevis. Good luck!

God bless you

I'm tossing around the idea of starting a Group Buy for these if there's an interest.

So, is there an interest?

Quick Disco' for Lexus GX470?

Do you know if these would work for a Lexus GX470 or GX460? A buddy of mine has the GX470 and improvised a quick disconnect but this is much better than what he built.

And what about the 4Runner with KDSS? What is the advantage of a sway bar disconnect if the KDSS is working? Anyone know?

These will not work with KDSS. KDSS serves somewhat of the same function. KDSS moves the entire sway bar hydraulically - so you gain the same articulation. The big difference in function is that KDSS continues to provide sway control so even while articulated KDSS retains body stability where sway bar disconnects like this do not. Adding disconnects to KDSS would lose some functionality with no benefit. Basically KDSS is better. But it's also only found on about 5%?? or less of 4runners.

KDSS cannot be compatible with these because KDSS does not have drop links (the part this replaces). KDSS sway bars are connected directly to the a-arms because the floating piston that allows KDSS does not also locate the sway bar. The sway bar on KDSS is located by the a-arm connection points. The two systems are sufficiently different in design that this type of mechanism couldn't ever really be integrated.

If you had KDSS and wanted something "like" this - you could do so easily. All you'd need to do is disconnect and remove all the KDSS brains, and use each front and rear KDSS cylinder independently. You would then use an electronic valve to either open or close fluid flow locking or unlocking the KDSS cylinders. The result would largely be the same. KDSS does some other stuff, so I wouldn't suggest doing so, but it could be done.

Similarly if you wanted you could replace this device with a small hydraulic cylinder and some plumbing to make it a push button lock/unlock, but the cost and complication would be more work than it's worth IMO. For those without KDSS, this looks like a pretty good option.

As mentioned these will not work with KDSS.

As far as I know these will also work on the GX. The GX does have the same size/length links as 4th, 5th, and FJ's.

Interested in a group buy, fronts only.

Has anyone installed these with real world reviews?

Dave,

That is the design I came up with six years ago for the 120 series and numerous people copied it. It works for the 6th Gen as well. You have to check the connections on the spindle upright occasionally to make sure they don't get loose.

I stopped using it about a year ago because I came up with a better system.

Keep the interest coming. If more people come forward I'll make this happen for you. I'll most likely start another GB for all options (standard & doubles).

I'm in for the Discos front and rear. We need to keep bumping this to generate some interest. Thanks Mike! Oh and Happy New Year!

Interesting. And may be interested.

Does the sway bar need to be secured (bungee corded) when disconnected?

How much of a PIA are they to reconnect. I have a Jeep friend who has issues getting his reconnected.

The sway bar never comes loose from the links. It only moves up and down, and never comes loose. Pull a pin to disconnect, put pin in the reconnect.
