Finished my SS 1.3 install!
Haven't come across any threads with this system in particular, so I figured I'd make one. To start off I can't say enough good things about the service and product that Steve provides... great guy that has specific answers to specific questions about these rigs... Since Bilstein has a huge national back order for the their Tundra 5100s I chose to purchase RadFlo 2.0 coilovers with reservoirs... it was more money, but I think it's well worth it.
For reference 1996-2002 - System 1.3 [1.3] - $1,640.00 : Sonoran Steel, Sonoran Steel Custom Metal Fabrication L.L.C. Custom Toyota Truck Parts and 1995 ? 2002 2.0? Front Coil-Over Kit
Measurements from hub-body (not including 1" bodylift) with my sub/enclosure, hi-lift, factory spare, and hitch
Rear 24.5" on both sides
Front R 22.75" L 22.5"
I'm gonna let the springs settle before I do any further adjustments
The RadFlos are well built to state the obvious... They use spherical joints on both ends for smooth articulation and as you can see the remote reservoirs have plenty of hose for mounting. However, they did not come with anything to mount the reservoirs, so until I find a better solution I used 2" pipe clamps. These are different rear shocks than what most people use... the 5160 is valved for a coil spring and paired with a specific year LC front spring according to Steve... only drawback being is that you have to drill out the upper shock mount from 11/16" to 15/16" to accept the thicker top stud and bushing... not that hard to do I think it took me 10 minutes with a UniBit. Steve does provide you with genuine Toyota parts where possible (bushings, springs, washers, etc) which I like personally.
After doing some driving and breaking in the equipment I'm amazed at how well the RadFlos control the front end... It doesn't exactly match the feel of the rear since the LC springs are so soft, but I can't imagine it gets much better than this for the money. I think this setup actually does fairly well on pavement with the sway bars removed... The front end seems to keep the truck stable. I might throw the rear back on, but I'm gonna ride around for a few days to see how I like it in comparison to the OME setup without sway bars. I run through some of these trails fairly fast and not once did I feel the shocks lose their control. I thought OME did well, but these RadFlos keep the front end planted much better. I highly suggest getting the extended rear bump stops though because the rear setup is super soft... you will bottom this suspension out!
Here are the goodies...
