Finally swapped the rad

Tickets to the ticker tape parade when the Cubs win the World Series if you can guess which one is the old OEM rad? [emoji12]

Did the swap today. Coolant was super clean coming out, so didnt bother with a flush. Installed the Spectra rad, fit and finish was excellent. Thought it was odd that 2 qts of ATF came out. So kinda did a mini drain and fill there.

All in all, took about 2 hours. Hoses were a biztch to get off. Front grille took about 5 min to figure out solo.

Highly recommend this "mod". If only for peace of mind.

I'm not sure if you have Pep Boys Auto where you are, but around California they carry Spectra radiators. I am still planning to replace my radiator and have decided on Spectra brand, but will buy it from the local Pep Boys even though it's a bit more expensive. I figure if there are any quality or fitting issues — I can can just take it back and get another one.

Normally I have no issue with ordering parts online, but radiators seem to be quite susceptible to damage from crappy packaging and/or delivery guys who are in a hurry.

Also, Pep Boys often run good discounts on stuff. Right now you can order the radiator online and get 25% off the radiator with the code 25SEP50 this will make the cost around $115 and you can just pick it up in the store.

 
Autozone stocks this one, Spectra CU1998, in store for local pickup for $139.88 & 20% discount online which works out to about $112
 
Brand new to this forum and the world of the 4Runner. Just bought my 96 sr5 two weeks ago. At 200,000 still had the oem radiator. Plastic tank cracked on me and in an emergency situation got a car quest radiator from Advance Auto. Actually seemed pretty decent considering all radiators are made out of stupid plastic nowadays...
 
why is this considered a "mod". as OP said. Is there something better about this brand?
Curious as I want to do a rad swap soon as preventative. Ive seen t00 many failed plastic radiators
my previous Toyota the rad went out about 180k , my wifes Volvo about 160 k my bmw 318 at 120k,and my chebby truck about 200k. All with same issue, where plastic joins metal

I think of it as a quasi mod. Hence the air quotes. Technically, its a modification to the vehicle. The OEM rad was perfectly working, albeit very dirty with insects from the last century.

Performance wise, I saw a negligible temp drop from pre swap, although it could be in combination with the blocked cooling fins.

It's more peace of mind than anything, and probably the best $200 I've spent on the rig yet. Next up, Viper alarm next week.
