Fire! Fire extinguishers are great investments!!!

So yesterday I installed a generic battery mount braise when my mechanic installed my battery he forgot to mount it down. Some how upon installing my new mount I must have crosse a wire or something because 20 minutes down the road I experienced the strangest sensation. Well, my truck all the sudden shut off just before I pulled onto the freeway so I Directed her towards a nice place to pull off and assess the situation. While coastin towards the nice gated community I noticed the smell of spoke, plastic smoke! I quickly stopped the truck, peeled open the hood and located the problem. A good size flame was quickly burning through my new battery harness and along the wiring from th battery toward my block. I struggled and knocked down the flam using my favorite t shirt instead of the gallon of water I had on my passenger seat. Smooth move number one then I ran the security guad box of the gated community and retrieved his fire extinguisher!! Hit the truck the the extinguisher and disconnected the battery! Operation save my truck sucksess!!!

I found a fire extinguisher fits perfectly in the tool compartment in the back of my gen5. I just shove the jack/tire tools in the back, and put a bungee cord around the extinguisher to keep it from rattling around. Even if I don't need it, it could come in handy for someone on the side of the road ... :-D

I have one mounted in the back next to the tail gate. Just hope I never have to use it!

saved my truck

from an earlier post:
While driving to dolly my Son's CRX Si. I was pulled over by a fellow motorist and was informed that my truck was on fire. When I pulled over i indeed had flames coming from the spare tire. While we were waiting for the CHP to come_ a grueling 5 minutes-. A passing utility truck on the frontage road just happened to stop and he had a fire extinguisher. We promptly put out the immediate tire fire and waited. we unhitched the trailer and dropped the still smoldering tire from the carrier. The fire department doused the tire to be safe.
There was no other damage - save for some rubber that melted and flame marks- that I could see.
When we ready to leave the truck wouldn't start. I have a full tank still- that was a scary thought- fuel pressure at the rail. But the EFI fuse would pop on crank. Had to tow it and the dolly back to the Uhaul.
The next several days I scoured the info on the T4R and Yota tech blogs. I check for crispy wires on the O2 sensors and engine to frame rounds. Still no start. Had to get another tow to the trusted mechanic and wait.

I keep 2 extinguishers in my rig. Velcro strapped to the roll bar, one on each side. Super easy access when my softopper is rolled up, as well.

there is no way i would be able to remove those fire extuingshers in any hurry velcro hates me ...

My extinguisher is on my roll bar too. I need to find a better place for it, because with the hard top on there's no way to get to it quickly.

By wiring from battery toward block, you mean this fusible link wire that's there so it will melt before anything starts to burn?

Was yours replaced with plain wire? Did you find out what parts shorted?

mostly all the wires coming from my battery were on fire but the positive heading towards my starter was the most severely burned. I would say no fuse was in place if I had to guess. Scary thing was the proximity to my fuel line!!!

UPDATE: Brought her back to the mechanic and informed him that he had not strapped the battery down. He quickly fixed it up. I will snap another photo of it as it is now fixed. I think the new wires to the battery are now upgraded

My extinguisher is on my roll bar too. I need to find a better place for it, because with the hard top on there's no way to get to it quickly.

Yeah, I have no rear seats either, so access is real easy for me. My sides are rolled up 90% of the time once it gets above 50 degrees outside.

Planning on one in front of the passenger's seat, and one on the rollbar.
