First time detailing

As the title says...this weekend I'm going to clean it up for winter. I'm buying Meguires(hear nothing but good about the brand) clay bar, Meguires nxt tech wax 2.0, and Meguires scratch x. What product should I use in place of regular dish soap I used to wash? Also what is the orde/process I should do this for best results. Thanks much in advance!

Dish Soap????? Honestly? AT this point just go to AutoZone and pick one they are all better than Dish Soap. hahaha
 
i bought a meguiars kit from the auto store came with wash wax and towels and some other stuff for like 20 dollars. it looked great after i was finished. i used the clay bar once on my old ladys scion tc and i didnt care for it (im not an expert with it so that may be why) it just seemed like a lot of work and i couldnt really tell a difference but like i said i could have been doin it wrong. i also used the scratch x and that stuff is great! my old lady ring scratches the inside of the door handle up all the time and it took it right out no problem.

the order i did it in was:
use the scratch x
wash
if i found some missing spots i didnt get with scratch x i used it again
wax
wash
quick detailer
 
Okay. will probably go with another meguires brand one! What is the order i should apply each of these in? I read that some processes removes the other making it useless. also do i just do a section at a time? :art:
 
Thanks! will check there in a sec...a questions though, if you wash at the start... then do whatever else u want... then wax and wash at end does it remove the wax?? or should i just water rinse it at the end?
 
Hi Spiggie, never use dish soap they are meant to wash away oil or wax a way, remember "Dawn gets grease out of your way". Only use a car wash, brand is not important. I use Meguiar’s products and I am very happy.

I clay bar and polish once a year, protect (with NXT) then wax (with Hi-Tech Yellow Wax) twice a year.

I recall the first time I ever clay barred, I was so excited I called the neighbors to say feel the paint, it was as smooth as new glass. Speaking of glass, as use the clay bar on your glass, the same crap on your paint is on your glass too.

Proper car washing liquid won't remove wax. Plain dish soap will. I wash with plain dish soap when I'm starting the process so strip all the old wax off. I go: wash with dish soap -> clay bar -> wash with proper car wash -> 2 coats of Zaino.

Actually...since you're going to be waxing anyways...Dish-soap is actually pretty good to use...Cause it'll strip any wax that's left.
 
Always use dish soap if you're going to wax immediately after. In between waxes never use dish soap. Use a quality car wash in between waxes...

i use the Meguiars Wash & wax (its yellow) might be $10 a bottle, but good Lord is it amazing! Do not use dish soap, it eats away at your clear coat & will make the paint & body exposed to the weather. Never wash with dish soap. EVER.
 
I use dish soap (dawn) once a year, as other said, dish soap will strip away any wax/polish you have on the paint.
Once a year, in the spring, Ill give here a really good wash with dawn, then put a couple good coats of wax on her, then take her out and get her dirty lol
 
Don't forget the underbody. For my winter clean up, I always go underneath and clean as needed, apply rust convertor to any surface rust and frame components. Then I apply truck bed liner to the under body and wheel wells. It takes about 2 cans each, about $28 total. Be sure to drop the spare and do that area well too. Check your spare rim that faces the ground. A little primer or rust convertor and primer may be needed there too. Best regards, Doug
 
What do you guys use/recommend for interior? Specifically dash boards and door panels? I've heard armor all is actually bad for the material and causes cracking?

Also, anybody know much about simonizing? Is it worth it?
 
Thanks for all the great advice, im going to wash (with a car shampoo when i pick it out) clay bar, wax, rinse, dry! ill post results. For interior cleaning i use this febreeze stuff that i use to mop the floors in the kitchen with, mix it in a bucket with hot hot water an get a rag. leaves a nice smell :)
 
You should use dish soap before the clay bar.

The dish soap will take more of the dirt and stuff off than car soap.

Now after you finish waxing and everything, you should then use just car soap from then on.
 
Okay! I'm going to stay away from the dish soap. Atleast until my first spring cleaning. Do I just run water over the wax an dry for my last step?
