Hey everyone,

I was planning on cutting most of my wheel well out of the front and back due to rust. So there would be no fender overhang.

I was wondering if bushwacker fenders would look ok? I was told they're made for if you cut out about 3 inches of material from the wheel well. I'm planning on cutting about 6 inches. Good? bad?

Also,

I have a little bit of rust, right below my door. Would a rocker panel be a good fix for this area?

Take her out back and shoot her, get a nicer one from the southland with a bad engine, swap engines, and you're done!

...At least that's my plan, and my rust isn't as bad. The thing is, you can fix that, but it's not cheap. With rust like that, it usually means the frame is rusty, and even a little rust on the frame means it's not fixable. Consider all options.

I can't see your pics here at work, but frame rust is repairable in most cases, been there done that.

Aren't you the one that always says that the frames rot from the inside out, so once you can see it you're already screwed?

I inspected the frame today and took a grinder to the rust. It was superficial, nothing too bad. I coated it afterward. I'm planning on putting 3 coats on.

That wheel well is by far the worst one.

Other than Bushwacker, what else would work around there?

Yeah, that's me. But I never said it couldn't be repaired. And I always say it to someone asking for advice on purchasing a truck. Buying a rustbucket should be avoided, but already having one is different.

You can weld plates over bad sections. But if the frame is really bad it gets to the point it's not worth it anymore. That's what happened to me, I was constantly patching the frame. Then I found a good frame close by and did a frame swap. It's a lot of work, and should be avoided whenever possible. I have pics of the rusted frame somewhere on the net, but I can't remember where, it was around 2002.

I've bought the 2 4Runners since then, and on both the first thing I did when looking at them was to check the frame all over with a small hammer. I lucked out each time and the frames were totally solid, so I bought.

The bush wackers will cover the rust .. but only untill the rust "eats" up the metal = not for long

Checked it out, the frame is pretty good. Most likely due to our dry climate.

Had some problems with bushwacker so I'm going to make my own fenders :S we'll see how that goes.

I triple coated the frame with a asphalt spray

From a body, you did a good job. the quarter panels look good. congrats on you r effort. I gotta do this to my truck also. will happen next week or so.

Funniest hack of all is not removing the emblems and painting around them. In my shop you get the "hack" award for doing stuff like that.

Metal work looks great.

Did you blast or grind the frame before you sprayed it?

Cool! looks like you've done tones of work. I live in the south and rust is just a fact of life around here. Luck for me I have very little rust on my T4R

However we are in the process of convertion a 1986 detriot diesel School bus into an RV. Once we pulled up the sub flooring we realized we had the begining of a rust problem. Someone recommended Navel Jelly as a rust converter. Wow that stuff kicks major butt! It's great for areas that are starting to rust or to keep rust from spreading. It creates a reaction. The rust turn white, then black. Works great if you grind down any visible rust first. But watch your paint, it will desolve it in a matter of minutes. It's a fast and pretty very cost effective way to get rid of rust while saving your steel.

94Beast4Runner: I totally lazy and didn't care to take the emblems off. It was early in the morning haha. In light, if you look really closely, you can tell. But so far no one has noticed

I didn't blast it. There was minimal rust in the front end probably due to past oil leaks which have been fixed. I got a pencil grinder to it with a industrial sandpaper tip used in the oil field. It worked well. The back end was far worse but no holes or weak spots.

It eventually needs to be done on every vehicle.

Vern: Ya, I live in a dry place, so my rust is actually minimal but I wanted to chop it out so it'll last for a few more years.

I wish I knew of that Navel Jelly stuff before I started! haha
