Flashing 4WD indicator light

Mine started doing the same thing today on my 2001. The 4wd light keeps flashing even when the 4wd button is released. Obviously, with the 4wd button pushed in and the 4wd light blinking ,the center diff lock won't engage. When the 4wd button is pushed in , you can tell that the 4wd is engaged but the "VSC off" indicator doesn't come on. Will it be okay to drive it with the 4wd light blinking and the 4wd button released?

For mine 1999 4runner limited edition sensor #2 or switch no.2 is 84222-60081

Make sure you give the dealer your vin # to accurately give the part number.

So I followed the thread that Doug posted over on yotatech and ran into a problem. The front diff sensor he replaced (part #84222-35070) fits 4runners manufactured up until 8/2000. Mine was made in 11/2000 so that sensor doesn't work for me. I went to the local dealership and that's what they told me. Apparently there are two sensors on the '01 plus models that do the same job. I was able to get the part numbers and a diagram of where they go. It isn't very help full and I was hoping someone on here knows more info than I do and can help me.


Sensor #1 is part #84222-12010
#2 is part #84222-35121

So you've already done what the instructions under the driver visor say to do in this situation? Changed the diff fluids?

what location is the 4 wheel drive mode indicator switch is it on the passenger side or drivers side on yhe 2002

I would say that reading the full thread on Yotatech will give you everything you need to find the culprit, which can be a number of things. "TheDurk" and "Adkins" submitted some very helpful information about checking the circuits to see if they are all providing current for signaling the 4WD ECU at each lever and button position. I had already removed all of my sensors and tested them. All of those worked. I checked the circuits per the suggestion and found that the actuator must have been opened (PO) and was slightly out of time and could not fully complete the movement to the position where the dash light would not flash. Only intermittently. After a little ingenuity and re-positioning of the actuator and rechecking the circuits, mine has been working great and on demand every time. Just my 2 cents.

I have another off these oddball...it won't get out of trying to be in 4wd, we think, scenarios.

2001 4Runner Sport with 245k. Was in 2wd when I bought it, never touched the shifter. One day I clicked the 4wd button on the side of the 4wd shifter just to see what it did, but didn't move the car. Let it sit. Next time I got in to move it, the 4wd lights were flashing, it felt strange to move, and would grind loudly when turning right. Forwards, backwards, disconnected battery, etc. nothing.

In the last weeks we've changed all the fluids, including front differential, and replaced both of the 2001 transfer case actuators listed above. Went to check it again, and now it blinks or is solid, and still seems to be stuck trying to engage.

What's the typical next guess if not the actuators & fluid?

Same thing happening to me

I bought my 2016 SR5 yesterday and I was playing with the 4wd knob in park. Little did i know i was supposed to be in neutral. However, the light is on AND blinking. I noticed that back end looks higher than the front. Not sure if that's the side-effect. I'm more so curious on what I have to do or whats going on?

A 2000 Limited that I'm looking to buy has the light on when the 4WD button is out on the shifter. Stays on when you push button in, then goes off briefly when you push the button to come out, but then starts to blink steadily. Can't do much to diagnose in dealer parking lot (forward backward didn't work).

Not sure what to think of this when considering buying the truck like this.

Blinking means it's trying to either engage or disengage 4wd.

Put it in forward gear and just barely give it some throttle and let off. Put it in reverse and again give it just a hair of throttle.

If that doesn't work now with it in gear and rolling very slowly forward turn steering wheel slightly while giving it just a hair of throttle threw turn then let off throttle.

Usually repeating this process gets it to engage/disengage. Then repeated use gets the system working smoothly again. Luck. :cowboy:

i just went thru this and my problem was the front diff actuator. I replaced the actuator and the light went solid when in 4x and off when released.

Trying to resolve my issue. Truck will only go into 4wd when button is pushed and I turn the truck off then on again. When I start truck 4wd is engaged with center diff locked then I have to push diff button to unlock. Any ideas

hard to find transfer case switches/ sensors

issues with the 2001-2002 4runner sr5 transferase decided to order all new switches from toyotapartsdeal.com. they're ar 4 switches/sensors but these are the harder to find ones

I did do a fair amount of reading before posting. Noob.

You literally just have to keep dicking around with the button and lever. Eventually it pops out. Has this happen so many times.

That's on the slow side. Keep exercising it and it should get faster.

My 1999 Limited was stuck in push-button 4H with lights blinking. Replacing the sensor fixed it. Here's a link to the part on Amazon:

Quick tip: you'll need a 27mm socket. A deep socket will not fit, get a regular one.
