Flashlight mount location question

I've been playing around with mount locations for my flashlight, but I wanted to make sure I'm not gonna run into trouble drilling into this location...thoughts? After searching old threads I found [MENTION=15176]spongerx[/MENTION] mounted a maglight on the passenger side of the center console but no real review on any issues he might have had. I like the location because its super easy to access, no interference with my feet, and the quick fists will eliminate the possibility of it coming loose at a bad time. I picked up some 1" screws that will penetrate about 1/2" into the body.

Personally I do not like large, detachable items anywhere near my feet.
Something comes loose and interferes with the pedals. it can spell game over.
At the very least put it on the passenger side.

Sorry, I must not have phrased the question very well: Is it a bad idea to drill into the body above the transmission housing?

I do like your other options though. Might need to think about this a little more before making a final decision.

I would not drill into the body, you're just asking for rust to start at that hole.
Mount it in the cargo area with velcro. They sell 2" wide velcro in white or black.

To directly answer the question, yes I think you can. I mounted a screw in base for a flexible arm phone mount there on the passenger side with like 1" or so self tapping screws no problem. Seems like I researched it and found where someone said there's like an inch or two space in there before you'd hit transmission.

Anyone can crawl underneath the vehicle to see if there's something on the backside of the sheetmetal that you don't want to contact. Not sure why this thread is making it harder than that.

Thanks for the replies. I don't want to drill directly through to the exterior of the body, wasn't sure if that area is double walled sheet metal or what sort of insulation or sound deadening might be there to absorb the screw. I looked around a bit under the truck but honestly I cant see crap there, and I've never dropped a transmission so I didn't know if there were linkages or gaskets I might damage.

I never understood mounting these big flashlights in the front seat area. Is stashing a headlamp in the center console not good enough? 99 times out of 100 I need both hands free to work on whatever it is I am trying to fix and find the bigger lights can be a pain to get situated. But since you asked, I would recommend under the seat.

haha my dad told me the same thing. I usually have a headlamp handy but its nice to have some more wattage when you spend a fair amount of time in the boonies and in camp. Nice to have it in the front rather than having to walk around to the cargo area.

There's a pocket in each door that a high quality LED light like a Streamlight for example would fit in perfectly. It would outperform any Maglite too.

I know you don't want it in the cargo area but heres where I put mine. I keep a little head lamp at the front just in case too.
