flat black grill

well, if it doesn't work out or looks weird i can always paint the rest...but right now w/ the center portion removed, it's all black where that center chrome piece would go...looks good. we shall see.

Either way my T4R will not look exactly like all the other ones in town. It will definitely stand out...
 
ecrew16, How about some closer up pics? Tried to click on the pic above but did not come up. I have a 08 Sport, like the idea and would like to see more pics of yours.

Well here are the results... hope the pic works, maybe A10 can make it show up w/ out using the link. I think it looks bad arse. I did just the center for two reasons. One, I think leaving a little chrome up front balances out the T4R...as there is chrome around the license plate in the rear and my door handles are chrome. Two, I started taking apart the grill and realized that there was going to be a ton of work involved getting the entire grill out unscathed...

What are your thoughts. Definitely won't see another runner like this one. I still may do the whole grill, but i'm going to see how this one grows on me.

Thanks A10...I think it looks cool as hell. Definitely tough and unique... Small lift might be the next step, but that's gonna be early next year.

That looks pretty sick man, I think I like the looks of that - looks unique for sure. I bet if you got the blacked out headlights you could black out the rest of that grill if you wanted to and it wouldn't look bad - It'd just be a lot less subtle, more bold I guess. Depends on what extent you wanna take this.

I'm about to commit sacrilege by mentioning Hummer here, but I remember my bro took me to the Hummer dealership when I was shopping for my 4Runner and the only one I could stand that didn't suffer from "Chrome-Overload" were the couple on the lot that had the $5k "tactical package" which basically included what you did here, blacked out elements of the truck that were normally chrome including the wheels, grill, etc - and it made the truck look a hell of a lot better, just kinda bawlsy looking - but alas, you can polish a turd and it's still a turd - and I couldn't take the plunge on a 5 Cyl engine that gets ass for mileage and has less power than many car-based luxury SUVs, poor reliability ratings, and less towing capacity than some light trucks, heheh /end rant

In other words, nice job man! I bet this cost you a LOT less than $5k they wanted on the lot! lol
 
Now that I've powder coated my wheels and painted the center piece of my grill I want to do the same thing to the chrome piece above the rear license plate, it houses the lights and what not. How do i get that off? Does the inner panel of the back door just pop off? I don't want to break anything. I want to paint it flat black to match the front and the wheels...then i'm done other than the impending lift. Wife is joking that eventually the whole thing will be flat black. But the license plate deal is the last piece.

Thanks...so to sum up, i just need to know how to get that chrome piece off so that it can be primed painted and clear coated.
 
nobody out there knows how to remove the rear chrome panel? I'm sure i have to unscrew it from the inside, but not sure how to get the plastic panel off of the inside of the rear door...assuming that's how you do it. This is probably not a common modification so I understand if nobody knows. I just don't want to break anything.

I'll jump back there and take a look myself when I get some time. I had my wisdom teeth removed yesterday so today's my first day up. I'll let you know if I have any ideas.

My only fear would be the back window and getting by that. If thats the way to that piece.

I'll let you know man.
 
AHH, didn't think about the back window, but maybe if it's rolled up i can get to the screws. I might just dink around myself later unless someone has a difinitive answer. The chrome is starting to pit, so my new flat black fettish is actually cleaning up the rig.
 

So i took a look and if you get on your knees and look up. On both sides of the tailgate door handle there are two tabs that look like you can seperate them and that will release the chrome part. There are also some screws down there but I think those are for the lights only.

Take a look yourself and see if you agree. I'm unable to do work right now as I have two bags of peas around my face for the swelling. :upset:

I see what you're talking about...might try to unscrew those lights to see if i can get better access...not quite sure how to release the tabs. If it's anything like the front they are screwed in. Thanks for checking...I'll let you know what I find.
 
I'm liking just the inner part of the grill being flat black. I saw a Silver Taco today w/ almost the same exact grill as yours. Only difference was that he still had the Toyota emblem silver. I think that might look pretty good to contrast the grill a little bit. Good job!
 
I thought about leaving the emblem chrome, b/c it pops right off...but i decided to go for the all black strip. Plus the emblem was pretty pitted and not in the best shape. Out here they don't use salt on the roads, they use gravel and sand. So we get a lot of rock chips and what not, plus a cracked windsheild is par for the course. The scenery easily offsets the negatives though. I like the all black strip...I'm eventually going to do the same to the chrome piece in the back over the license plate...all black, even the emblem...once i figure out how to get it off that is. I might go to a body shop and see if they can give me any direction. I don't want to break anything.

I'm not sure if he's still doing it, but I know there was a member (Bowtie?)doing the blacked out headlight mod for people here on the board - he did a hell of a job, looked nice from all the pics and feedback I saw.

I'm not sure of the methodology he employed, but I know it involved baking the lights, popping them open, painting, and resealing.
