What should I do about the flat tire

Had a flat tire today. Sidewall is ruined. Only have 7600 miles on the factory duellers. I eventually want to put 285/70/17 ATs on there with a 2" lift, but the timing isn't right now. I'm thinking about either replacing the one dueller or buying 5 275/70/17 AT tires and selling the 4 (3 good plus spare) on craigslist for $300. My guess on rough cost would be $700-$800 for the ATs or $300 for a new dueller. I think I know what I'm learning towards, but what should I do?

$300 for a new Dueler? Waaaah?

More like $150.

Maybe you should just swap the spare on to the pretty rim, and get yourself a cheap spare.
 
I'd get the tires you really want and sell the other 4 good ones since they have low mileage on them. Someone will give you good $ for them.

I guess it depends on the shop in your area, but for me and Discount Tire, I could get 2 tires mounted for that price.


My vote is save until you're actually ready for new tires. Get what you want then... if you want to go larger, start saving for a proper lift. Buy once, cry once. Don't go for a cheap or lower quality lift than you intended because you felt forced into making a decision so quickly. It's only going to kick your butt later... And that may be your wife doing the kicking.
 
That seems kinda pricey. My 285/75 Ridge Grapplers were only $275 installed.

I'd vote with put the spare on the regular rim and get a cheap spare.

Then save your bucks and don't tell your wife like the poll said
 
Not sure how it works on all models, but the factory spare for the limited is actually a 20" wheel with the same factory tire. You might not even have to swap the tire to the other wheel.
 
My local Tire Shop says $1k out the door for 4 275/70r17 KO2s.
$200 to replace the Dueler HT.

Not sure there is much market for a set of 3 used tires, if I keep the spare.
 
Go for the 275's, but don't drink the KO2 Kool-aid! You're better off with the Cooper Discoverer AT3 or Firestone Destination AT.

Get the KO2s or Cooper AT3s now in 275, not much smaller than 285 and no lift needed.
See if you can get a credit for the 3 OEM tires from the tire dealer.
I was able to get $100 credit on my OEMs with 35k when I bought my Toyo AT2s.

I was in the same boat. I blew a tire with couple of thousand miles on it. I just jumped ship and bought some ATs. It was right before Labor Day weekend so I got a decent deal from discount tire and than sold the rest of the stock tires for 200 bucks. I think I ended up paying like less then 300 bucks for some ATs when all said and done.
 
Thanks for everyone's advice and votes.

If I could find an aggressive looking c rated tire, I would have gone 275/70. But since everything is e rated in that size, I am going to just replace with another dueler for now. I will use the money saved towards the upgraded suspension so I can fit the 285/70s when these wear out.
 
I just picked up these ridge grapplers in stock size, c load rating. Very pleased so far after close to 1k miles.....

I was in the exact same situation several months ago. I bought some TRDOR wheels with brand new stock tires on them, since I wanted the wheels. Figured I'd ride the tires out before upgrading to the AT tires I wanted. Of course, I blew a sidewall after a about 8K miles on one of my rear tires.

I said screw it, and had new 275/70/17 KO2s thrown on. Couldn't be happier.

A lot of people think that the KO2s are terrible in the rain, but I've had no issues in some very wet conditions since putting them on.
 
Well, if you truly intend to lift and put tires on that need a lift, then I would either do all of that now, or just toss the spare on the normal rim, and get a cheapo spare.

If the tires you want to get do not really need a lift to fit, then get those now if you have the funds to.
