Flemster's 2000 SR5 Sport

been reading since the beginning.

Gonna need more.

Do you have any type of locker?
Why make the leap to 35s? So much added stress to the drivetrain (and cost/time to make them fit) 33s seem to have gotten you everywhere you needed to go. 33s and a locker would be about unstoppable for what you do.

I have had a locker from the beginning. (Stock E-Locker) I made the jump to 35's for the purpose of snow wheeling and for fulfilling my massive ego. Plus I like doing stupid shit that most people don't... So 35s' was a no-brainer. Yea I need to gear the pig eventually but its manageable. For the time I put into it to fit and the use I have gotten out of them Its been totally worth it. I even got upwards of 20mpg for most of my trip so that was a pleasant surprise....

So overall yea 35's are harder on the drivetrain... people run 37's on the stock drivetrain... Stuff can and will break but thats all part of the game.

Another week of school has gone by.. that means I can post!
Sooo Morrison Jeep Trail. This trail had me going all the way until I was running it. It looks really scary from the bottom but truly is not that bad. Drive smart, pick good lines (use spotter if you need it) and take your time.

Looking up the valley before crawling into bed the night before

The next morning we started with a quick breakfast, manned up and hit the trail.

We started up the trail and emmediatly got stopped by a family coming down (its a one way trail) the guy claimed he lived their and does it everyday but seemed very confused as to why we told him its a one way road....

Most the switchbacks were like this, pretty straight forward, almost made all of them with out having to reverse.

We made it to the top! The trail leading to the top of the Mesa was much harder then the switch backs in my opinion.

Gears put a smile back on my face when driving my rig. Get 5.29s as soon as you can. It's worth every penny just to be able to hold a hill in 3rd. lol

I'm saving!! Torn between doing it myself and swapping the gears or just buying a complete 3rd member and front diff.

If you have the tools, time and patience, then learning to doing it yourself would be a solid idea. But if you don’t have all those, then I highly recommend ECGS. They make it so easy and their warranty is worth every extra penny spent to have them do the work. They have the skills, knowledge and resources to get it done fast and right. They also have amazing customer service. You probably saw all the diffs I went through earlier this year. They have been absolutely awesome to work with, and their customer service is the best I’ve ever worked with. Just make sure you go 5.29’s and toss a front locker in while you are at it.

I'll second going the ECGS route. I priced out buying all the components and doing it myself. ECGS charged me 200 more to build them for me. Plus they back there 5 year warranty. It was an easy choice to make for me.

And, get a front locker. lol

I didn't have much homework tonight so I can do some posting here!

I left off at the exit of Morrison Jeep Trail, parked near a crazy looking repeater/bouncer or something... hmm. Who knows.

Regardless the hunt was on for a great campsite for the night. Wyoming was weird, we are used to the dispersed camping regulations of Colorado. Find a made campsite with a firepit etc. most being marked by signage. Everything else is either un-inforced or off-trail.

Here, on the other hand, there was nothing... for miles we saw nothing close to a campsite. We really wanted to find something that had already been made so we weren't adding to the destruction of the land.

On the search!

Well, mile after mile we got impatient and decided the next pretty flat spot would be home. Something right off the trail that we could "Tread Lightly" on.

Here was home for the night. Just in time for another amazing sunset and burgers on the skottle. Overland AF i know...

The next morning came easy, most of us called it a night around 9 after some adult beverages and too many mosquitos.

The view from my tent was a great way to wake up as the sun started to work its way over the horizon.

Today was a travel day.
Hit Beartooth highway and head for Montana. My planning for the trip was this whole area, budgeted two days for it. Easy right. The goal was to camp near Seeley, then spend an easy afternoon around the town of Seeley Lake and maybe hike Glacier Lake a wee bit north of that. Then head north and Fish the Flat Head near Glacier.

Well, this happened...
We stopped at a waterfall to take in the amazing scenery that Beartooth offers.

An older lady, in her 80's if I remember right fell off the trail and slid about 80ft where she then broke her leg and received some moderate head trauma.

Lots of running around, hauling strap, moving water, yelling at stupid people for being stupid, and moving trucks to block the road. Here came these well trained dudes about 2 1/2 hours after the incedent.
One pass overhead to spott their LZ they touched down on the road like pros.

Well, about 4 hours later we were back on the road headed for Bozeman!
We rolled through Gardiner, MT. where we decided we needed some showers, Pizza, and some downtime. About 6 hours later we were rolling for a camp which was a campground about 15 minutes north. RIP MY PLANS!
We camped in a fairly boring spot off this river, but camp life was nice and the surrounding area was beautiful... and it was free!

The next day was a LOT of driving. We pushed straight to Bozeman in the morning. We went to a coffee shop and I met up with some friends who lived there, edited some photos and about 2 hours later we were headed for Blankenship Bridge, about a 9-hour drive taking the route through Seeley Lake.

Going through Seeley was a must for me.. As a kid, I had spent about a month of every summer going to Placid Lake right outside of Seeley until my grandmother passed away and the Cabin on the lake got sold. Having not been there in almost 9 years... I had to go driving so close!

We drove about 8 hours with a stop for some sleep in a campground.

We ran into the Winchell's at our campground after basically chasing them north on their 3 month trip... soo coool.

Met up with Maggie from boulder and her DOPE right hand drive Landcruiser
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/140899154@N02/44015576442/in/photostream/" title="FLEM1798"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1837/44015576442_39468638ac_b.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="FLEM1798"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

This is where the trip came to a slow. derpiful and his GF had headed for home, Ripcord Reynolds and his GF dipped out as well. Only 5 of us left including Maggie for the night.
We enjoyed the night around the fire and great conversation about our trip and were sad to be making our way back to Colorado the following day.

In the morning we went to town, gassed, ate donuts, got coffee and pushed hard! We took the west route around Banff and down straight to our northern Montana camp spot. We loved it so much we needed to do it again!
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/140899154@N02/30196034938/in/dateposted/" title="FLEM1830"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1813/30196034938_dc2a86800a_b.jpg" width="1024" height="576" alt="FLEM1830"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

About 9 hours later we were their enjoying the river, beers, and our last few days before heading home.

Called it a night after some amazing steaks and a few too many (just the right amount) of drinks.

The next day was another hard push south. The plan was 10 hours straight to the Tetons to camp on a road between Ashton Idaho and the Tetons.
\This is where I count my blessing... This trip I had driven almost 2,800 miles up to this point, a lot is at 70-80mph. Hard turns, potholes, rough roads, cattle guards, railroad tracks. You name it.

Well going a wee 35mph a pothole claimed my lower balljoint bolts....
THIS SUCKED!!!!

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/140899154@N02/44015446262/in/photostream/" title="FLEM2911"><img src="https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1820/44015446262_d318411a9f_b.jpg" width="1024" height="683" alt="FLEM2911"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

As I slid to a stop in the ditch I knew exactly what had happened, i calmy radio out to the remaining few that "My lower ball joint broke". I knew being dramatic and pissed off wasnt going to make this any easier so I saked up, and started looking at the damage. It wasnt good. Not something I could fix on the side of the road with any ease. Lower Ball joint was rounded off at the bottom (Would have to be cut off) the brake lines were stretched badly, the outer two bolts stripped out of the spindle and CV was wrecked. Also did not know the state of the steering rack, Tierods, upper control arm etc.

Kachow!!

Well, the decision was made, called my insurance and they were able to send a tow truck from Jackson, WY to tow me to Ashton, ID. This is where we would wait for my Dad to bring a Uhaul to tow it the 11 hours to Fort Collins.

This happened at about 5 p.m...
Homeboy showed up at 3 a.m. LOOOOL

This guy was so clueless. We basically had to load my own truck on his rig. He kept jamming the lower a arm into the edge of the bed and overloading the winch and it would unspool. We had to tell him to stop and then figure out how to get the front end up and on. Hilift did the trick along with using some of their slider blocks.

And home we went after a quick stop in Wyoming for a last night of camp.

What a great trip! Well, all except for the LBJ failure. That always freaks me out. As much as it sucked, I am glad it happened at slow speed with few other vehicles around. When did you change your LBJs last? Did you use OEM with new hardware?

I hope the repair isn't as gruesome as the picture of all the destruction.

Man oh man i want to plan a trip like that so bad. might have to do it solo though. Fiance isnt into to, neither are my buddies. I need new friends.

Question...How do you deal having your dog around? Where does is he sleep, what does he eat, unless you bring a good amount of food for him? Ive been wanting to bring my GS Bruce with me on some camping trips.

same boat. most of my adventures are solo. but mostly ok with that. i too need some new friends :becky:

Great trip report and awesome pictures! Sorry to hear about the LBJ failure, at least it happened at low speed! Seems like there has been quite the rash of failures lately. Looking at the picture of the 4Runner on the tow truck it looks like the Treadwright tire delaminated too?
