Okay, I wouldn't say I flipped it, but it did flip.
I was driving on the highway with my wife doing around 65 mph when a vehicle on my left made hard contact with my left rear passenger door. I only saw the vehicle for a second, and i'm not sure if it was before or after he hit me, but it had the same result as a police PIT maneuver. The truck began to slide with the nose facing left. I corrected by turning right, and the nose followed that direction, but I wasn't able to straighten it quick enough. It continued rotating right until we were sliding sideways, with the nose facing the guard rail. Then the truck rolled counter clockwise, initially on the drivers side A-pillar, but then flipped over the roof (there's no damage on the roof so I guess we were airborne?) and landed on the tires, sliding backwards into the guard rail and somehow ending up facing forward again.
We had been on our way to a friends pool and had just bought a 12 pack of Corona beer in cans. That box opened and those cans found their way everywhere. One of them I believe hit my head, and when we stopped it was in my lap spewing beer in my crotch. I looked at my wife and she seemed totally unharmed, I looked at myself and I felt unharmed, so I told her to we needed to get out. My door wouldn't open from the inside so we climbed out her side.
Both of us are uninjured for the most part. I have a bruise on my head from a beer, and we both have marks where the seatbelts scraped us and where our knees hit the door panels. But otherwise this was a pretty comfortable end to such a violent crash. The person who hit us left the scene, but witnesses apparently got his license plate. The officer who took my information said he planned to go to this persons home and get his information.
Anyway, I just wanted to share what this type of crash looks like and say that for a 20 year old Toyota it kept me quite safe, and I'll be looking for another 3rd generation. Did I mention be were both wearing flip flops?
