What he meant was locking center diff. On the 2001 model, it has the multimode 4x4. The center diff (the black button by the steering wheel) locks the center diff. When you have 4wd engaged (button on the transfer case selector), the truck is in All Wheel Drive rather than true 4x4. This is good for wet or snowy weather and is safe to operate on dry pavement. When you press the black diff button by the steering wheel, it locks the center diff and you are then in true 4wd. It is not the oh so desirable locking rear diff that everybody wants.

Oh boy - look at those engine bay pics. I would assume the undercarriage is a rust trap. The engine bay clearly got salt - what do you think the underside looks like?

I used to live there, but don't recall underbody damage being too bad on a vehicle with a body this pristine. Whatever. Its probably why everything there is cheaper

It's hit and miss. SR5 wasn't undercoated. The frame is done, but the body isn't bad. Only rust was on the rockers.
My Limited spent time in Chicago, but it's undercoated. It's almost perfect.

Wasnt an option those years. 2000 was the last.
Typical area for these trucks. "Rockers". And the reason is. The sunroof drain tubes drain water into the rocker panels. If you ask me. That's the dumbest design ever. I extended my drain tubes outside the rocker panels. No more water inside.

So...if I can get someone to send me photos of the rockers and they look good, are there any other frame areas under the vehicle that tend to see serious rust problems?
The trucks there literally have half the miles for the same price as whats here, and I'm not expecting insurance to give me more than $5,000. Frankly even that's being optimistic.

Both rails at the rear LCA mounts, the drivers rail right next to the fuel tank, and above the spare tire.

I will agree that the body is super clean and especially the interior. BUT, Nope. It's super rusty. Look at that engine bay.... Imagine the salt and water abuse the frame and all associated harware and parts have taken. I've bought enough 4Runners from around the country to know how bad this 4runner has it.

Important thing is your alive. Nothing you could have done here, just be glad you were in a safe well built vehicle, things may have ended differently in a different type of vehicle.

Srs doe, glad to see you both got out in one piece. And re: the beer smell, I recall a time when a friend of mine who worked at an Aston Martin dealer got a call to fly to France and bring back a customers car to the UK.
The customer had a barely road-legal racer which he'd driven to France, raced, won, and left in the hotel car park. The car was so uncomfortable to drive on the road (no aircon, perspex windows, no soundproofing, trolley-jack suspension) that the owner couldn't face driving it all the way back again.
My friend got a bit enthusiastic and confused driving on the wrong side of the road and ended up spinning it into a ditch somewhere still in France. Unfortunately, the owner had left a big bottle of champagne in the back which shattered into 1000 pieces...
The French police didn't parlez Anglais, and were not impressed at all to drag him out...

Slight Update
Police found the guy who hit me and I now have his name, address, and insurance information.
The story he told police was that he is diabetic and he blacked out behind the wheel. he "came to" when he hit me and he witnessed my vehicle roll before deciding to to flee. He told police he "thought he could get away with it".
I find the diabetes story hard to believe because my mother is diabetic, and a low blood sugar condition that can cause a black out would be difficult if not impossible for her to recover from without help. This guy claims he came out of it and was coherent enough to continue driving, not to mention his home address is 22 miles from the scene.
I brought this up to the officer and he emailed me this morning stating that whether the story is true or not, he fled the scene of the accident and is fully responsible. So his excuse is actually irrelevant, and he will be charged with hit and run.

So the conclusion of this fiasco:
My insurance company (Liberty Mutual) made some shady moves on the valuation of my truck. They offered me $4100 on it, and I told them that amount as unacceptable and I would like to refute it. The claims woman I was working with sent me the valuation report from the 3rd party company they use, and I noticed the report stated that my truck did NOT have Air Conditioning, Cruise Control, or Alloy wheels. Not only can you see these options visible from the crash pictures, but anyone inspecting the vehicle would need to be blind to miss them. When I pointed this out, she added these options and updated the valuation by $600, bringing my total settlement to $4,700, which coincidentally is the amount I bought the truck for (they of course didn't know this).
I wrote her manager explaining that if the claims girl hadn't sent me the valuation report, they would have gotten away with undervaluing my vehicle, and that could easily be interpreted as fraudulent behavior. The claims girl emailed and apologized and her manager called me to apologize and explained that this company they work with frequently "misses" things, and they try to send the valuation reports to all customers for review. She also said that this company is Liberty Mutuals choice, not hers.
I don't know if that's true, but their performance with customer support continued to suck. The claims girl forgot to mail me the forms I needed to sign to turn over my title, and she also seems to have forgotten to forward my claim to the other drivers insurance company. After 11 days of waiting I asked her the status of my deductible payment, and she said they have been leaving voicemail's with the other insurance company. Coincidentally the other insurance company called me the next day, and 3 days later I got my deductible and some settlement funds we agreed on.
Now I'm hunting for another 3rd generation 4runner in phoenix and having a pretty stressful time doing it. Any decent truck that appears for sale is gone within hours, and some good looking ones I've gone to see have had hidden issues. I thought I got ripped off on the truck I had because of the paint damage on the roof, but that thing had a great interior, and tons of maintenance records.
