Decent 3rd gens, that are reasonably priced, are gone within an hour in Phx. It's crazy how popular they are, and the dealers/flippers love them. They must have a phone app that tells them when an ad posts as I have been sitting at my computer, refreshed my screen and had an ad pop up, and when I call it is already sold.

I also looked at one recently that the guy said he would hold until I got there. I pulled up and several people were in the driveway. Turns out a flipper got there and offered the guy $500 more. The seller was a man of character and offered it to me at the higher price, since I called first, lol. The flipper had it up on CL a week later for over 2x what he paid.

Be patient, you'll find one.

On all the sites I listed for you, including Craigslist, you can set an email alert. You should set that up so it emails you when one is posted. I live in a very populated area. In fact, many of the largest car dealers in the country are in South Florida. But when I need to buy a car, I travel .......... anywhere. I bought my 4runner I have now in Houston, TX. Cost me $235 one way on Southwest, and I had a nice road trip home. I saved thousands and by opening up to anywhere in the country I had a much larger selection. Any reason why you wouldn't travel to get the 4runner you want? I am sure many on here would help with giving an inspection, for example if you found one near me I would gladly pop over and take a look at it.

Buy it back and use the interior for your next one, then part out the rest. That should broaden your pool to select from.

Yep. Somewhat ironically, I traveled to Phoenix to get mine. High miles, but a clean 1 owner, no rust, rear locker and reasonably priced. Flew down, did the timing belt and valve cover gaskets at my brother's house in Queencreek and drove it home.

I have purchased several cars out of state (TX, CA, AZ). I have no problem with a quick flight to get something clean or to save money over the often rusty and overpriced/unloved stuff in my state. It generally works out really well.

I did get burned really bad just once though. PO didn't tell me the car had been wrecked (doesn't always show up on carfax) and it took me a few days to figure it out once I got it home. Moral of the story there is, if you are spending a large amount, it's worth $100 or so to have a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) done at a local dealer or reputable independent shop. Get that done before purchasing the plane ticket.

Anyway, OP glad you were able to walk away. Keep looking, new Runners pop up every day. You'll find a good one in time.

That really blows, I haven't had that type of situation yet, but I have offered to come over and bid other buyers lol. I have a craigslist alert setup and have my phone directly in front of me at work. when it flashes with an email alert, I read the ad, sometimes not fully and then text the owner with a pre written text. this strategy has actually made me first in line twice now, but the last truck had it's odometer replaced and the one before that had warning lights, broken drivers seat, and a cracked windshield that the owner neglected to tell me about.

I would be willing to travel to any area of the country where rust isn't prevalent, but I don't have any paid time off from work right now, which makes the process potentially more expensive with unpaid days off. I have family in chicago that is willing to look at trucks out there for me, I just don't want to be selling it in phoenix 5 years from now and getting buyers who are scared of rust.

There are some nice ones here but I think I'm going to end up spending more than I want to. The only ones that seem to stick around are priced higher than it seems they should be.

Slight Update

Police found the guy who hit me and I now have his name, address, and insurance information.

The story he told police was that he is diabetic and he blacked out behind the wheel. he "came to" when he hit me and he witnessed my vehicle roll before deciding to to flee. He told police he "thought he could get away with it".

I find the diabetes story hard to believe because my mother is diabetic, and a low blood sugar condition that can cause a black out would be difficult if not impossible for her to recover from without help. This guy claims he came out of it and was coherent enough to continue driving, not to mention his home address is 22 miles from the scene.

I brought this up to the officer and he emailed me this morning stating that whether the story is true or not, he fled the scene of the accident and is fully responsible. So his excuse is actually irrelevant, and he will be charged with hit and run.

I'm a type 1. If he was drinking OJ or eating crackers while feeling bad or about to black out the story is plausible. Every diabetic reacts differently though.

If both of you had been extremely injured/killed, his ass would be in prison. But because you're 'ok' he only gets a misdemeanor?
Hit on run on property damage is one thing, hit and run after flipping another vehicle is completely different.

The only difference in murder and attempted murder was the victim was lucky enough to survive the assault. The assailant is still just as guilty.

When I was in high school, a classmate was involved in a hit and run (he was NOT under the influence). He hit a woman walking her dog. He killed the dog, but the woman had only a few scratches, bruises, etc.
He was 17 going on 18, so the judge gave him 5 years in prison (first few months in juvie, to be then transferred on his birthday) and suspended his license. He was not allowed to graduate, etc.
Harsh, but THAT makes sense to me. The judge didn't 'go easy' on him because the woman had fast enough reflexes to avoid the brunt of the collision.

The only reason you were as 'ok' as you were, OP, is due to your quick defensive driving skills. If you had been a teenager (or simply had less experience), you may very well have gotten hurt more than you did.

Oddly enough, a DAY before my accident, a friend of mine was hit while riding his motorcycle by a teenager who failed to yield, and he died from his injuries about a week later. The coincidence of us both being involved in potentially deadly accidents a day apart and me walking away with nothing has been f-ing my mind ever since. I'd like to think my reflexes kept us safer, but I really don't know. I could have ended up crossing lanes, rolling more, rolling over the guard rail etc. but i don't know how much of that was in my control.

It was a roll and not a sudden stoppage forward/aft. The airbag sensor will be in the front end some place.

Well I found this one yesterday. $500 over my budget, but it's one of the cleanest I've found and I was running out of time.
225,000 miles, zero rust, push button 4wd, rear diff lock, and original leather that isn't torn.
