Know I haven't posted in a good minute. Thought if share this with you.

Went to The Flats ORV for the open invite this weekend. Had no problem getting into this section, but the end was a little steeper than I thought, and I kept nailing my bumper. I went to back out, and went a little too high on the passenger side. Broke the back driver glass, and put a few more dents in her.

Anyone ever change out the back glass? Called SafeLite and get want damn near 400 for it. Don't have that kind of dough right now, but if someone's done this, I'd like to know how much of a PITA it was. I can do it, just want to know he easiest steps to avoid breaking one from the junk yard.

Haha! Nice!! You need to keep that rock stuck in the roof rack as a momento.
I find it a bit ironic you flopped it at a place called "The Flats" :surfer:
 
You'll probably has to cut the glue. Make an opening and insert a skinny brake cable and just move it back and forth to cut the rubber glue. Wear gloves and goggles (not the sun glass type, the real goggles) since you are playing with broken glass.

You need an inclinometer......and deep dish rims or spacers to widen the wheel base for such an incline.

The quarter glass is a ***** to replace, for 3 main reasons:

  • Glass is Urethaned in, very tough to cut through
  • Urethane is recessed where its very difficult to get a knife to
  • 4 plastic "pegs" or clips hold it when its glued from the factory. Break these, you're bushed

Get it brand new, don't spend all the time trying to get a used one out just to break it or break the clips. I have tried removing them even with the proper tools, and its just not worth it.

This works only for vehicles with the Butyl, or where the seal does not interfere with it (ie windshields). If you use this method, you will ruin the outside seal/trim
 
If i broke the back glass i would go get some thin sheet aluminum or maybe steel, Cut out the window and either silicone or screw it in place and paint it gloss black. No one would even know and it would be cheap.

There is a 4runner over on pirate that has aluminum instead of rear glass. Looked fine. I guess plexyglass would work too but plexy scratches up and looks bad after awhile
 
Hey if it hasn't dropped yet, get some black duct tape or gorilla tape and take both sides up. It will help to keep it sealed for the time being till you can get it replaced. I ended up replacing it with factory. Got a deal through a friend of mine. Scored one with seal for 50 bucks. Normal price for new is just under $300. The glass and seal come as one piece unfortunately.

Originally after it broke, I was looking into a darked smoked macralon ( think that is how it is spelled) hoping that I could somehow use the same seal. Its a pain when those break for sure. Just tape it over with some black gorilla tape to hold you over.
 
I've replaced both back quarter glass panels...one by a glass guy, one myself. Was able to get glass for $50-$75 from a salvage place. The trick is to cut the tip of the adhesive applicator into a V, to get a nice deep strip. Don't listen to these monkeys...NEVER BUY NEW!!
 
Oh I wouldn't buy new either. Thats why It took about 2 months before it finally got fixed. Salvage yards are your friend for sure. The trick is to get the window out with the seal in tact. If you can pull the inside quarter panel on the donor, you can cut the urathane from the inside to save any damage on the outer seal.

Good luck and hopefully you are able to find a used one.

Thanks for the info. the window did come off going down the interstate, so I've got some cardboard and black Duck Tape on it now. You know what they say. Can't Duck it, Fuçk it.

I thought about just sealing the windows up with some 18ga, but idk if I'd like it too much.

Would be a ngood way to not have to worry about the glass against a tree or anything again though......
 
You could probably do that. Just paint it with hammered black paint to give it a slight textured gloss look. Use a tube of urethane to get it sealed like factory. Cut the metal to the size of the recess instead of the actual panel. That will eliminate the need to run a trim piece. I may go that route if mine breaks again.
 
I would use smoked plexiglass or acrylic. Its super cheap, easy to cut, and would make the installation easy. Whats cool is that once you make a simple template, just buy and cut a few more sheets for spares!

Kinda like panel vans.

The only problem is that it scratches too easily.

The Vagine tires are because I can't get my 37s wouldn't have been too good to use to go 600 miles on, especially since they have balance issues still.

I need a set, but all the damn good ones are either in Cali or some where out west.... Can't really afford that right now...
