Flowmaster 50 Series - Delta or SUV

UPDATE: SEE POST 10 FOR INFO RELATED TO ORIGINAL QUESTION

I have spent days and days over the last year or so, and 4 hours alone today, researching mufflers/exhaust options. Every time I'm about to pull the trigger on something, I read a "too loud" review and get cold feet. It's time to just do the thing.

After all of this consideration, I have decided on the FM 50 series. Many reviews on here, but I think most are of the "SUV," or "Super 50 Series" as it is now called. Super 50 Delta PN 52557.

However, there is also the "Delta Flow" in the 50 series, that is for smaller engines. Some on here have that. Flowmaster 50 SERIES DELTA FLOW MUFFLERS PN 942552.

On FM's main muffler page, they have a chart which includes a 4/6 cylinder section - the delta has a check, the "SUV" does not. A rep from FM told me to go with the delta, because it is for smaller engines like the 4runner, whereas the SUV one is more for your larger engines in bigger SUV's and trucks. He said it would be a little deeper at low RPM's and not as raspy at higher.

So based on this, I would lean towards the delta. There are just a lot of good reviews on the SUV here. What I'm looking for? How many times have you heard "louder but no drone." Well, yeah. I want a little more than stock, more in the lower RPM's - but I drive up the mountains on I70 a lot and would therefore like to minimize the higher RPM noise.

Thanks to all!

Magnaflo

Only an opinion. I have a V8 and slapped on a 16" Magnaflo. It has excellent sound with no drone at cruising altitudes. I have been very happy with my selection and couldn't imagine doing any thing else. When I romp on it, it will turn heads. Cruising down the highway know one knows the wiser. You Tube it. I would listen for the gurgling sounds. (which I don't find attractive) to each their own.

I am pretty sure that these Flowmasters are a baffled design as opposed to a straight through design of other brands, making them more restrictive. Just something to think about.

Dang - guess I'll throw the Magnaflow 22" back in the mix. I think that would be closest, right? Hard to find clips.

Haha I'm never gonna be able to pull the trigger on this one..

I have the Flowmaster 50 series suv muffler and it's been great! A nice tone to it but not over kill, you can definitely hear it when you want to but not overly loud during normal driving or droned out on the highway. I might have a couple vids where you can hear it pretty good let me check?

I wish I could remember where on Earth I read it, but I came across a very interesting article a while back that explained the soundwave & flow characteristics of the baffled, chambered, and straight-through muffler designs.

In short, the baffles mean almost zero when done correctly (ie Flowmaster), and some straight-through designs actually can create more turbulence and restriction in certain cases. There's a lot more to the science than just pushing air through a tube...

And this is coming from a Magnaflow guy... :tape:

If I can find the link, I'll post. It's a good read. In the meantime, I say don't worry about the restriction factor as much as the sound you prefer.

Good luck!!!

For those curious about the original question/for searching purposes:

I called Flowmaster back today. The rep said that the Super 50 (formally SUV) PN 52557 is 5" thick, and Delta 50 PN 942557 for smaller engines (v4/v6) is 4" thick.

He said both are good options but indicated the Delta 50 would be both deeper and louder. Suggested that if it were a daily commuter, I might like the Super 50 more, because it will be quieter in the cabin as well. If it were more a once-a week on the trail thing, Delta 50.

So, I'll be going with the Super 50. Happy to see that many on here have it and like it.

He said airflow will be a bit better in the Super 50 but any performance changes would be about the same between the two (though I'm not expecting any, I just don't want things to get worse).

I can't comment on the sound of a V6 through a 50 Series, but the SUV muffler is quieter than I would like. If i had to do it over again, it would be a normal 50 series.

Not that I hate mine.. just want a little more noise.

I know you decided, but...

Hi, I know you decided, but I have a Magnaflow 22" that I love. I just welded it in place and it sounds good. It has absolutely no drone at all. I am more on the conservative side when it come to sound, but it still sounds a bunch better than stock and I got a performance boost as well.

Here is a video that I took.

Thanks for the input, haven't yet purchased. Any still exterior clips of start-up, idle, a few revs? 22" video was hard to come by online

Resonator?

One thing I found while searching muffler/exhaust for a 4runner is most people simply remove the resonator when updating but then complain about drone?
The resonators ugly & gets in the way sometimes it's true but to cancel out resonating drone waves is why it's there to begin with.

While looking at vids/posts rather its still on or not is something to consider when drone is mentioned on someones short list.
In a loud muffler it makes a difference if removed but the quieter mufflers like a Super 50 SUV series which already have a "Resonance Tuning Chamber" designed in them according to Flowmaster, then resonance is not a big problem anyway.
Either with or without a resonator installed it should be very minimal so they say?

For just how much resonance a stock resonator can cancel, it may be minimal or a lot, myself I don't know but that is what it's there for. Big and ugly as it is I would think it works well????

Peace!

So??? How did it turn out? Did you go with the Delta or Super? Do you like it???

Imo you might prefer the suv model because that raspy ricer noise gets REALLY old ! We have super 70ii & I don't see them anymore . The longer the canister(oem size) the better sound again imo ! Plus the more oval slides up in tighter to frame as opposed to oem . We just completed our annual vaca to Mont. & Ore very nice rumble at low speeds & 80mph auiet enough to not drown out dvd player or Sirius .

I got the Super 50 Delta haha. The naming was all confusing. More importantly, it's the 52557 model.

I also took the resonator off and "dumped" it so you can't see any exhaust pipe.

There is zero drone or increased sound cruising at highway speeds or really at all above 30 mph. At low RPM's around town it sounds great to me, but rarely/occasionally can feel a touch loud. It is noticeable to people who aren't "car people." Of course, I got it so it would be a touch louder, so I'm not complaining, but I do plan on having a side exit, instead of directly underneath, to maybe reduce the interior noise a little bit. Not sure whether or not that will work, and it's certainly not something I'm in a rush to do! (two years later and still haven't)

I think this thread just sold me on the Super 50... My situation: My tailpipe rusted and broke apart from my muffler, and I was told the rust is too bad to weld back on.

Now I'm not an exhaust maniac, and I'm only looking to "upgrade" it bc it's literally cheaper than replacing it with stock, but the better sound will be an added bonus :thumb3:

My truck was in and out of the shop for 3 weeks (its a long story), but I was patient and almost as a "reward" the guy is giving me a deal. I was asking him today what the repair would run me and what route to go. He looked at it, laughed, and said "come look at this". He showed me 3 different 4th gens, and old Ranger pick up, all with the same exhaust setup: the OEM muffler'n'back was removed, threw on an AM muffler and welded a 90 degree turn straight down, done. So he said if I bring him the parts (muffler, clamps, etc..), and a spare tire carrier I've had laying around since mine is MIA, he'll install it all free of charge.

Awesome, I just a Flowmaster 852556 Super 50 series suv and a flowmaster cat. Both in 2.5, I'm going to run 2.5 back after the first cat. When I get my headers I will run 2.5 all the way back from the collectors.

Super 50

Hopefully this post will be beneficial for some folks.

V8 2005 Runner
Flowmaster SUPER 50 with Resonator removed.

The droning was unbearable below 2500.. I constantly try to keep above 2500. Difficulty in Los Angeles traffic.

Got the Flowmaster Resonator to replaced the stock resonator that was removed.

NO more drone below 2500. It fantastic. No more ear plugs!!!!

If you get the SUPER 50, leave the stock resonator on. Not sure how much drone the stock resonator removed.

If you buy the FlowmasteR resonator...it will compliment the flowmaster SUPER 50. Super 50 generate drone at a certain frequency. The Flowmaster resonator will create an inverted same frequency to cancel it out.

Beautiful
