Flowmaster Question

I'm about to pull the trigger and get a 50 series SUV Flowmaster. Any tips? I'm wondering about dumping under the vehicle or routing to the back. I'll be putting a bend in the pipe so it's not sticking straight back, but didn't know if it was needed or not. I've heard of people "dumping" right behing the rear axle? I'll be duck hunting, not in deep water much, but over the exhaust for sure. Didn't know if "dumping" would be ok w/ that or if I should route further back. Thanks! Any other tips about exhaust are welcome !
By the way, I would LOVE a Borela system, but for $100 I'll be going w/ the cheap flowmaster. Hope it's not too loud!

You should be fine with the dumped tips. I might go that way if I can't make up my mind on where the tips should be. may I ask why your going with flowmaster?

Thanks. I just wondered about the dumped tip in tire deep water or the added noise in the cab?? Just thought about that, but it will be louder inside if I dump it vs. routing the the right rear.
The reason I went w/ Flowmaster is because it's CHEAP! I've never had a V8 that would do any aftermarket exhaust justice, so I don't want to drop $600 on a Borela system that I might not even like. This way if the Flowmaster is not what I thought I can swap my OEM back on for a couple hundred or less in labor.
I also like the sound of the Flowmasters in general. Not as raspy as some other's I've heard. I'm hoping the 50 SUV series will be a good rumble but nothing crazy like glass packs.
Any suggestions on a better sounding muffler?

Well I am looking for at least SOME performance increase. I'll be getting a CAI one of these days. After reading some more online looks like Flowmaster doesn't offer much for performance? Mostly sound? What else is out there that isn't too lound?

Your correct. Flowmaster is for sound only really not much power if any. Maybe areo turbine or magnaflow should be what your looking for and they cost about the same as the flowmaster. you can always look at youtube for the sound vids. I have my exhaust choices down but I have the 1GR so the sound is VERY different from what you will get.

Why not just get a borla turbo muffler? I've been thinking about doing that. It's the same series muffler that comes with the catback system the only difference is you get a single 2.5" tail pipe as opposed to dual 2" tailpipes... They're only about $115 shipped from summit.

YOu should think about Magnaflow. That is what I have and it is in deep mud all the time. If you are going to have the muffler in water a lot then def do not get Flowmaster they are known to rust quickly in those conditions. I have mine turned down right after the muffler directly under the truck. It sounds great, not loud really but a nice rumble for sure. My gas mileage went up when I got it almost immediately and that was me romping on it more often because it sounds better.

I had a flowmaster 1 chamber with a turndown in front of the axle on my Z for 8 years and there wasn't any rust when we cut it off about a year ago, the shop coated it in high heat paint when they welded it on (2001) and it's been fine since. It has spent more time in mud and water than most dedicated mud trucks.

I can say the same for my friend who has 2 of them on his '89 sierra, they've been on for 10 years now with no signs of rust, they were even held on with chicken wire for a year or two (which should have scratched them well enough to expose oxidizable metal).

I'll look into the Borela Turbo. I like the youtube clip I found, but he has the whole system not just the muffler.
Any idea on the loudness compared to stock? I"m looking for a little rumble, but don't want droning or crazy loud until I step on it. Thanks

i gotta agree with autobond on this, i had a flowmaster on my jeep, cant say it was because of scraping rocks, etc. then going thru mud, but mine had rusted a bit. lasted over 10 years till i sold it tho.

durability is not a concern w/ me, I'm just looking for a good sounding muffler that's not too lound.
Also wondering if it will be louder in the cabin if I dumped it as mentioned earlier?
Nothing against the flowmaster, but I've read a lot saying they are for sound only, not much if any performance. I know nothing will be "much" but there are plenty of mufflers that will give better airflow than the flowmaster.

i've been running a flowmaster 50 series delta flow on my rig for a few months now and so far so good, i wanna try the turbo muffler from borla though, at times my flowmaster gets a bit loud for my passengers.. i can't see any videos of how it sounds on a V6 so i guess i'll have to be the guinea pig

There are a few videos here. There are a lot vids of the cat-back on 4.0L tacos. It should sound similar from the outside although the inside should be quieter on a taco.

I didn't realize it when I posted the other post but someone at borla told me that the cat-back muffler is specifically tuned for the v6/v8 4runner and that the turbo muffler doesn't perform nearly as well. He also said the turbo and the pro-xs mufflers were basically the same.

what about gibson cat back system? its 300 on burtman industries, thats what im looking at, but i might just do a muffler. maybe vortex?

autbond- what made you want to dump the pipe right after the muffler? and do you have a link to hte muffler you got? if you dump it right after the muffler will it be louder then taking the pipe all the way to the back?

Thanks for the link gaterose.. i wonder if the muffler alone would sound pretty close to the cat back on that video.. it doesn't sound too bad/loud. Worst case scenario is i go back to stock.. i might give the turbo muffler a shot.. i also have a K&N intake so hopefully that would be a good combo

You're welcome, there was a vid I saw the other day with the interior of a V6 with borla & the K & N intake but I can't find it anywhere..

It may sound similar but the universal turbo muff is single 2.5" out while the cat-back turbo muff is dual 2" out. I think that would make the universal quieter, using one 3-4" tip instead of two 4" tips.

Hope you can post a video if you do just the muffler, I really wanna do the same setup if it sounds ok. $800 is as cheap as I have found the catback and I can't justify it when I don't really want duals.

if you cut the res off, you'll have to pay a shop to weld a bend (with hanger) to the side or where ever. cost- around 50 bux

Haha great, a guinea pig... My muffler guy told me the resonator elminates <5% of noise, so I don't think it would make a drastic difference. If I get one I'm going get the res cut off and route the tip out the side, like chaz said, to cut down on the sulphur smell.

Does anyone know the cheapest place to get the borla, I love the look and sound of them. I have an 04 v8, they seem to be going around $900 for 4runners without vvt.
I'll probably end up getting the SS gibson for around $450.
