I basically replaced my entire stereo
Pioneer NEX 4200
FOCAL IS1690TOY Components in the front
FOCAL IC 165TOY in the rear
JL Audio XD600 Amp
JL Audio 8" sub in the rear (getting installed soon)
and a whole lot of dynamat.
Even with the Sub still pending, system sounds amazing. Love the new Pioneer head unit too.

So you can confirm that IC-165TOY is a drop-ion replacement for 4Runner rear door speakers? And/or rear hatch? Can't find that info online.
Have the Focal in the front doors and it's nicer than OEM for sure.

I am running the IC-165TOY for sure. Just not sure if it's in the rear doors or in the tailgate or both. I think it's in both.
Sorry guys, I didn't install the stereo myself. I had a shop to do it. I'm to busy to be ripping my 4Runner apart unfortunately. I just like enjoying it.
I have to go back to the shop to finish the subwoofer install but when I do, I"ll find out about the speakers in the tailgate.

Please find out if they had to do any modifications to either of the speaker locations or the speakers themselves if at all possible.

I have to Focal IS 690TOY in the front and used Polk Audio db651s (6-1/2" Slim 2-way Speakers) in the rear doors and the hatch door. The rear doors and hatch door use the same size speakers. The Focal IC 165TOY *should* fit in the rear/hatch door locations without any problems. I can't absolutely confirm this, but looking at the photos on the Crutchfield website, the plugs in the IC 165TOY speakers have been modified to match the factory speaker plugs. Again, these *should* be plug-and-play.
But to be 100% honest with you guys, I didn't notice a huge difference in sound improvement when I replaced the rear and hatch speakers. Also, the Focal IC 165TOY speakers are a bit pricey compared to other brands. You can make virtually every other speaker brand work by using this $10 adapter: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_12071035L/Metra-71-035LC-Speaker-Wiring-Harnesses.html?tp=3097. Interestingly, those adapters came with the Focal IS 690TOY kit. Since the 690TOYs already have the factory speaker plug built-in to the speaker, I didn't need to use those adapters on the front speakers. I used those 2 adapters with the Polk rear speakers. I actually only had to buy 2 extra adapters for the Polk speakers I put in the hatch door. The adapter has the factory speaker plug on one end and a positive/negative lead on the other end. The pos/neg leads plug directly into every other speaker on the market. Essentially, the adapter is plug-and-play and is much cheaper than the Focal Toyota-specific models.
Bottom line (my opinion): If you are really keen on upgrading the rear door/hatch speakers, you can purchase cheaper speakers with the adapter. If you are really keen on using the Focal Toyota-specific speakers, my bet is they are directly plug-and-play without the adapter.

No, they are slightly quieter for equivalent HU volume level and source material, compared to stock.
I bought them also. Honestly didn't sound really that much better. I ended up adding a 4 channel up 2 paired pushing the front woofers with hpf turned on and my other 2 channels are pushing a 10inch sub in the trunk . Honestly I would have been better off spending lot less money on the front woofers replaced with woofers with built in tweeters in addition to the top dash tweeters no front amp and just a mono amp push a sub...

It's possible the Dynamat is contributing to the better sound quality for me as well. Since I did them at the same time I can't say which did what to the sound. I will say that the stock system was very muddy. Bass notes were booomy and inarticulate. It is now a lot clearer and tighter.
I bet it is. But when I think about the $$$ of those speakers, looking back in my old 2008 runner it cost me $400 total for new front woofers with tweeters factory head unit and a mono amp to a woofer with base knob and it sounded perfect. My system now with the 4 channel amp doesn't even sound the same. Although I can tell you these focals can handle a lot of power I can crank the gain on those front woofers and hear the music clear on the highway with the windows down....

I've heard good things about Sound City. Did you get a chance to see them doing the install? Are they careful to not brake any plastic tabs, and did they route the wiring correctly (both sides of vehicle). Can you post or PM how much they charged you for parts and install? Thanks!
Will you install the FOCAL IC 165TOY in the back doors and in the hatch? I am curious to see how the install turns out.

IC165TOY was installed in both the rear door speakers and the tailgate (total of 4 speakers).
Yes it was a drop in, no modifications required, but man it was expensive.
The system is done (kinda). The guy who was supposed to make the custom box flaked and everyone else is asking for way more than I'm willing to spend. So as a temporary fix for now, I just threw in a Kicker Hideaway sub under the passenger seat. It does a decent job. Sounds wonderful when the car is off, but road noise tends to wash out the bass. Going to just use this setup for now until I found someone up here they will build me a custom box for a decent price.
