Fog Light Mod Not Working For Me

Good day to all!

I would like some electrical advice if someone would be willing to share. I have a 2002 SR5 that came wired for fog lights (including the relay and fuse in the engine fuse panel) but not the light stalk on the steering column. I want the fogs to come on at the same time I turn on my headlights and I don't want to buy the OEM fog switch for the steering column.

I added OEM fogs and did the mod where you ground pin 16 in the DRL relay and add a jumper from pin 1 of the fog relay to the parking lamp fuse but I get no voltage at the connector to the light assembly. Am I missing something here?

Any help is much appreciated as I am no expert when it comes to vehicular wiring.

When we added OEM fogs to my brothers, We got a turn signal that had it built in. Worked just fine, If you cant figure this out try getting the wiper stalk.

Since you have no fog switch, you need to connect pin2 on the fog relay directly to ground.

It's REALLY finicky. You've got to make sure the connection to the relay is super snug and you have to make sure the fuse is pushed all the way in or it won't work.

I appreciate the reply. That's one of the tutorials I reviewed prior to doing the work. I've gone back through and checked all connections to ensure they are tight and they are. They are soldered in so I'm confident they are gtg. I'm thinking something else needs to be connected since I don't have the steering column stalk with the fog light option.

Yes, id just ground it to your battery ground since its right there. The only bad thing is that you wont be able to put your cover back on unless you cut a little notch for it.

Everything worked like it should on my 02. You should get the stalk sometime. I dont think it cost a lot.

Chuck Konarske, a 2002 Sport Edition 4Runner Owner, has came up with a solution for 2000+ models years.
He writes...
"After doing your mod, owners of the 2001-02 model year trucks need to locate the green and black wire in pin #16 of the connector to the DRL relay, relay D8. It's located just to the right of the steering column, down near the driver's right shin. This wire needs to be cut a couple of inches away from the connector, extended and grounded to a convenient point. I use the lower bolt of the driver's side fuse box as an easy-to-reach ground. Tape off the piece toward the connector and you're all done. It's easy enough to do without diagrams as long as continuity is checked between pin 16, in the D8 connector, and the number 2 coil connector in the fog lamp relay socket, with the fog switch on. Turning it on and off will drop continuity, proving you have the right wire."

Update for year 2000 4Runners:
R.C., a 2000 Limited 4Runner Owner, wrote to me of his experiences with the Fog Light Mod...
"The pin # you reference for the D8 connector from the DRL relay is different. It is pin #14 not #16. The color is still Green with a Black Stripe. Besides that the mod worked great. I checked continuity between pin #14 and the #2 coil connector in the foglight relay before completing the mod. I also decided to install a switch in my DRL's. It was pin #2 in the D8 connector, Black with a Yellow stripe."

Yeah, I saw that tutorial as well. I can't find the stalk any cheaper than $54 so I want to avoid that. Besides, I want them to come on every time I turn my headlights on without having to flip the collar switch on the stalk so that's not an option for me. Wiring it up is ALOT cheaper and more convenient, provided I obtain the knowledge to do so. I appreciate the responses and recommendations though!
 
If you just leave the stalk switch in the on position then theyll come on every time you turn your headlights on. Mine even flash whenever I lock the car with the remote if the switch is on.
 
Pin 2 is the other silver pin on the relay correct? If so, I don't see how you can get a wire in there without bending it back.
 
Okay, I ran the ground from pin 2 and the drivers side fog came on but the passenger side did not. I went over and gently licked the area where the light was and it came on. I took the light apart to check to see if the bulb was seated correctly and it was with no wiggle. The light comes on and off like it's not making contact inside the housing but if it's jolted it comes on. I think this truck has a demon in it.
 
ok, now the light doesn't come on anymore. Does the light need to sit firmly in the housing in order to catch a ground? Had to take it apart again to take the bulb out and as I was taking the bulb out the light came on. this is quite confusing.
