The only reason I would use a relay is becuase the switch from the parking lights uses a relay all ready and you can tie in off that.

Ok, Now to explain everything.

I have my Neon tubes running off my accessory, so they stay on when the truck is on. I have ran it off the parking lights before.

The reason why you need a relay to run LED's or Neons is because it's a negative trigger system

A negative trigger system is different from a normal circuit that you usually are used to.

I think I explained it before,

A normal system is let's say your parking lights, You give it 12 volts, the parking lights turn on. However now it's the total opposite in a negative trigger system.

What happens in the negative trigger system. When the parking lights are off, the wire has 12 volts, or is hot. When the parking lights are turned on, the wire loses 12 volts. IT's a negative trigger.


The photo I included is showing where the black plug can be found. It is that plug right next to the fuses. You should be able to find the door trigger there.

Ok, Below is the diagram for the wiring a Relay and using a negative trigger to power a 12 volt source.

30 is the common. What ever goes through that wire ends up in
87a or 87.

87a. when the relay is not working, Gets what ever 30 is. So if 30 is positive, 87a when the relay is at rest is positive. When the relay is active, when 30 is positive, 87a would read open.


87 is gonna be used as the out put. This is what you connect to the neon's hot wire or positive wire.

86 would be the "switch wire" this you connect to the Door trigger wire. Be careful in not grounding this wire. Otherwise your dome light will always stay on and your keyless entry wouldn't work right.


85 has to have 12 volt power for the relay to trigger when 86 has negative trigger. This throws the pole.


So I think that would help whoever is wiring up something to a negative trigger wire

wait so the switch triggers the negitive not the possitive?

yep. the wire is hot 24/7... ONLY when you turn the switch on .. it goes to ground and negative......

I'm an electrical idiot, can you still draw this? I want exactly what you describe, lights come on and off with dome & also have control from a switch. I would REALLY appreciate a diagram! I don't know what a diode is!

if you check out THIS thread it tells you where to tap into the ignition to run it so that it acts like the dome lights.

Alright, this is what's going on, the picture that I have included is supposed to help you understand what's going on with the picture. What's going on in the picture is that it's modified from the previous picture. now what you see is the diode and the switch. The switch is a toggle switch which you need to be able to ground. The switch wire that connects to the relay needs to be wired after the diode. The reason why is because the switch is supposed to give the relay ground it needs if the door is closed. The diode prevents the dome light from turning on when you toggle the switch to turn on the neons. The diode you can actually get at radio shack.! So send me questions if you got them. I should be able to answer them. This might be confusing. If you really want I'd wire up the relay and a neon tube and label everything if you still dont' have an idea. Then it would pretty much make life as simple as can be!

Sorry.... been working horribly long hours every day.... but the diode you use is about half the size of a tic tac. YOu don't need a big monsterous one. I don't know how many watts.. but not many....

I have streetglow neons on my current vehicle which will end up in my 4runner when I receive it. I tapped my power and ground cords into the back of the cigarette lighter wires leaving my cigarette lighter still functional. I never had any issues with them even with something such as my cell phone plugged into the lighter. It also has an on and off switch (music controller) hooked up so I can have the lights on and off whenever I wish.

i got the 12V one. thought that made most sense... i'd say it's about the size of a half tictac... (boy is that the least scientific thing i've ever done!)

hopefully it doesn't blow anything up!

i'll let you guys know how everything turned out after the weekend (hopefully)

otter: one more question before i start opening up the insides of my truck.. i'm confused about the relay.. do i need to buy one (what kind?) or do i just tap into that black plug you took a picture of? I am planing on hooking up my LED footwell lights with a switch & diode so i can have independent control as well as auto w/ the dome light.
