The number of sensors on cars is increasing at a shocking rate right now. I'm an automation engineer, and work primarily in automotive. Where I work we're building FOUR separate production lines that are all producing various types of cameras. Lane departure, blinds spot, etc.
We've also recent done the forward looking RADAR, and I have a line coming up that's building cameras for heavy trucks that also are capable of broadcasting telemetry information to vehicles around the truck it's installed in, like speed, GPS location, and merge info.
Once all the cars are capable of talking to each other, we've crossed over the a point where they'll be able to drive themselves. One of the biggest challenges for the current crop of self driving cars is avoiding unexpected things humans do on the road.

I'm a networking guy, and when I think of "things talking to other things" all that brings to mind are those [people] who would want to intercept/manipulate those communications for fun and profit.

Don't forget "big brother". Capital One shuts down my freaking credit card every few weeks because I make so many purchases online.
I foresee a future where computers tell us: "So you're in a hurry because you need to make an important meeting and do 80mph on empty roads to get there on time and if you don't you'll lose your livelihood? Too bad, maximum speed on this road is 70mph."
orrrrrr they let you speed but then automatically send the data to the DMV for fines.

My EZ Pass used to do that back when I lived in New England. Not so much for speeding between toll booths, but speeding while going through the EZ Pass lane.

When will we learn? It starts with cars, then our homes, roads bank accounts cell phones everything we do is tracked, we allow computers to run our lives. I will never like the idea that I can't be in control of the machines I own. I'm gonna be like Will Smith in I,Robot. That scene where he drives his car in manual mode and everyone freaks out about it
