Found a factory nav unit.

thats crap, that guy should be put out of buisness for selling people toyota camry nav units with green lights. "Yea its going to be 1500 bucks less than the real thing .. becuase if it were regular price .. no one would pay 3000 dollars for a camry unit to go in their 4runner." i would wait for a unit that is supposed to go with the runner that has orange lights. and you dont have to rig it up. just my opinion.

I was told by a Toyota Service Tech that I could not just "put" a factory Nav system in my 4Runner. He said that it was very complicated and that we would have to buy a whole new brain for the truck, and that it would cost a fortune to do it.

I went by Hi Fi buys today to look at aftermarket nav units. The Pionner Unit was very nice, touch screen and all. It was nav, xm, tuner and played dvd's. It was about 3k. He also told me that Eclipse is coming out with a new unit that is double din, like our stock hu, it will be very much like the Factory nav unit. It should be in his place in about 2 weeks.

From what I've learned on this forum, the 04 Runner Nav unit is a 2 piece unit. You have the part that mounts in the dash, and the 'brain'. I guess the brain is where you put the map DVD.
So I think that is what the dealer meant when he said you would have to install the brain.
I haven't seen the 04 4Runner pieces, does anyone have a picture of what needs to be installed? I don't think it would be too hard, just have to route the wires, that go to the brain.
I have a 04 Limited, and was thinking about installing the Camry unit, until I found out it doesn't support our 10 speaker system. So I'm stuck trying to find an actual 4Runner unit.
Wonder if in 05, they will make it a 1 piece unit? Get rid of the tape deck, no one uses them anymore anyways.
That sure would make things easier..

AVN2454----The answer to all my problems. Eclipse also makes a touch screen non-navi version with an integrated 20Gb Harddrive...although it sounds like a pain to upload data.
I have got to call my local Eclipse shop and find out the price on this unit. I just was waiting to find a 2DIN setup that I liked...something about that pocket on a Metra Kit...now I can fill out the space, have navi, MP3 and a quality head unit.....gosh, now if it is only priced right....

You have a good point about japan... NAV systems are everywhere and they have many many different options to choose from. ... but if you lived in tokyo.. i am not sure how anyone would get around without one. I know that last year... if you wanted an english unit for Japan, there was only one model on the market (and it wasn't all that great compared to the newer models.)
