There are other SUV's that use more gas and do less than the 4Runner. i wish i was getting 18.5mpg in either of my trucks.
i get about 15-16 w/ the T4R and 12-14 w/ the Nissan (which requires premium). i am very heavy footed on both (especially the Nissan). figures are from a mix of Parkway driving and around town. i got 18-19mpg highway w/ the Nissan when i took it to DC twice.
you'll get used to the prices. maybe to give it less sting when you fill up, fill up every time your tank is at half.

I feel your pain. I have a 4X4 V8 also, and usually get in the mid 13 MPG range, but that's manually figuring it out with a calculator and resetting the trip odometer at every fill-up. The computer usually reads higher.
That's all city driving though, it goes to the mid 18's on highway. However, it's frustrating at times since I don't take it over 2,000 RPM and coast as far as possible to red lights.
I'm a heavy footed and aggressive driver. hard launches at lights ect.... Never have dropped below 15.5 in the city/rural mix and that with running winter blended fuel. In summer I get 16.5 with the same driving habits. My hiway trips have been between 19-29 (empty with 1 passenger). I also never even figured in the extra miles I actually travel because of bigger tires which would even make it ever so slightly higher. I have a v8 4x4 and after all the 4x4's I've had I'm thrilled with the gas milage.
My mom's 05 trailblazer 4x4 with the 4.2L 6 cyl. is lucky if it cracks the 13 mark , she drives ultra conservative .

Trouble is the gas situation (unlike times past) isn't going to get better. We are now programed to accept $3 a gallon, the experts predict $5 perhaps as soon as 09. Over a C note to fill the Runner
(at 16MPG) won't float. Hate to say it but it might be time to let go and check out the other options.

I honestly could not tell you , I get exactly what the window sticker said. Sometimes I feel how the comp. in the truck learns your driving habit's. I've never used the on board comp. but have compared it to my manual calculations and the average is pretty damn close ( with in 10th's of a gallon ) . I also never believe in break in periods , I drive it like I normally do right from the start ( have done that all my life with never a problem). Hell we were off road when my truck had 85 miles on it.
Another thing I've noticed , tire pressure and the type of tires . I run my Revos at 40 psi , and I think the tires themselves are great on milage.
I don't beat my truck but I do drive aggressive and off road when I can find a trail or whatever. I maintain it to a tee , detail it to a tee , always double checking tire pressure , ect.... I don't check it that often , maybe once a month since I didn't buy this for gas milage and I really don't care about gas prices ( it is what it is , however wrong it maybe and I still have to pay it to drive). Although I would like it a LOT cheaper and would totally be in for a fuel boycott.......lol.
I get slightly less milage than out v6 4x4 Escape , and my wife drives it pretty conservatively .
Don't get me wrong Josh about the gas , I would not be happy installing different tires or a lift and have my milage drop 3-4 mpg for as much driving as I do.

All of 2007 we here in Wisconsin were hearing that by the late end of the year we would be @ $5 per gallon. Thats about the 3rd time we've heard that here in 2 years . ( media based )
