Pretty crazy crash between a 3rd gen and a hundy. I feel like i have seen that truck before. Anyone recognize it?

100 series has a Slee out back versus what looks like a 4xInnovations front on the 'Runner.

I've had my doubts about those 4xI bumpers from the get go... they use the same mounting points as the OE bumper w/no extra reinforcement or upgraded bracketry.

Looks like they crumple like an OE bumper too.

EDIT... I checked out the IH8Mud thread... apparently the impact was at ~35MPH... No matter what that 4Runner would have had on the front, it probably wouldn't have fared well versus that Slee rear.

That bumper doesn't look so good. No way I would buy one after seeing that. Then again, it was aftermarket bumper on aftermarket bumper. Maybe that makes a difference.

That's what I was thinking! I hope everyone's okay.

It looks like the spare tire on the LC caught the leading edge of the hood on the 3rd Gen, smashing the hell out of it. It would be interesting to see how it would have faired with a upper hoop on the bumper, but like Bigfish said I'm not impressed with how the bumper mounts held up to the impact.

The way those bumper mounts folded over, I'll bet a top hoop would have just embedded itself into the hood/engine bay.

You're right about the spare causing most of the hood damage though. I didn't catch that before, but you can clearly see circular marks on the hood from the impact with the spare in the last photo.

RE the windshield, I'm thinking that's from airbag deployment. Doesn't look like a skull hit it... you can also see a horizontal line straight across the center of the crack where it looks like the airbag cover smacked the windshield.

I think you're right about the hoop, esp. the way the bumper folded with impact. Definitely not a good review/advertisement. Wonder how it compares to other bumpers - anyone seen any front cash photos?

There is an ARB verse deer on the FJ forums. ARB rocked te deer. I have seen a few bent up from accidents here and there but never the vehicle to get an idea of if it saved it or not.

This shockworks crash is interesting. Obviously not as severe, but still think it held up better than above for the circumstances.

Somewhat surprising actually, however I have zero knowledge how these mount to the frame, so it may not be surprising to others. An off-center collision might have a different outcome altogether though.

Thank GOD the air bags deployed!
I have been lucky enough to be saved by an airbag before and it has been a huge concern when thinking of getting a custom bumper.
Does anyone have pictures/video of ARB's crash test? (I know I saw them once, but couldn't find them on a quick google search looks like the you tube video was deleted)
Even though its in a controlled environment it would be a nice comparison.

I think that's a good point. Reading the posts the driver of the 4runner walked away from that crash no problem. I would assume that if the front bumper didn't give as much as it did, I'm sure he would have sustained damage to himself.

In an accident I would want my bumper to crumple like that. From a wheeling perspective, as long as it takes the hits(rocks, trees, etc) - then I believe that is a successful bumper. IMHO

I want as much crumpled steel as possible on the front of my Runner if I ever get in frontal off-set impact--and I want to walk away. I wonder what the bill on the Runner was. The skid looks untouched, so I wonder if the frame got bent at all?

Not trying to start an argument, but do you have kids?? Everyone has different ideas in wheeling I guess. But when we go, we always take my runner and my wifes ZJ. We have two little girls and two dogs as well. We never leave home without any of them, they always go with us no matter where we go or how tough the trail. They wont let us go without them! One daughter rides with me, and the other with the wife. They are learning young, and I am soon getting a small Toy pickup to build up as a crawler for them to drive when they are old enough to tag along with us. Its a family thing I guess. Yes, they are in their car seats and everyone is buckled up and safe.

An accident like this is totally unexpected, and could happen out of the blue, anywhere, just like this did. So either having your family with you on the trails, or on the highway, this could happen either way. Just my 0.02.
