Not trying to start an argument, but do you have kids?? Everyone has different ideas in wheeling I guess. But when we go, we always take my runner and my wifes ZJ. We have two little girls and two dogs as well. We never leave home without any of them, they always go with us no matter where we go or how tough the trail. They wont let us go without them! One daughter rides with me, and the other with the wife. They are learning young, and I am soon getting a small Toy pickup to build up as a crawler for them to drive when they are old enough to tag along with us. Its a family thing I guess. Yes, they are in their car seats and everyone is buckled up and safe.

An accident like this is totally unexpected, and could happen out of the blue, anywhere, just like this did. So either having your family with you on the trails, or on the highway, this could happen either way. Just my 0.02.

well said man. lucky you have a wife that's interested in that stuff!

unfortunately, my little brothers and sisters would rather read or hang on for deaf life... They don't look happy at all on a mild wheeling trail.

damn that 3rd gen got Fuked up! im sorry but that 4x bumper had no chance, no side bracing no top bracing, it was pretty much a bumper that's made for looks, but then again most plate bumpers are like that.

Not all plate bumpers. I know my ARB wouldn't crumple like that, it's rock hard and built well - it's one of the oldest and most respected plate bumpers out there. In some ways, I think it set the standard...

i had one and i was not impressed, the steel is very thin, and the tube for the light hoops, i can't believe they just left the lower part of the tube there with out any bracing. altho i agree that the shock absorber in the mounting plates is a good idea for high speed crash like this. if i was to get a plate bumper shrockworks gets my vote, 3/8" 1/4" steel with DOM tubing, cool design. only down side is the price.

Thanks! Yeah, its just a family thing with us. My daughters absolutely love it. Heck, they are constantly trying to get me to go up, over, through, stuff that there is no way I would think about attempting. They have no fear is all I can say!! And it sure makes it easier when they are all into it as much as I am, especially the wife! Alot easier to convince her of my next mods, because she knows if I get something, she is next to get something!!

Back on the main topic though, I just wonder how my tube bumper would fair in an accident like this?

This is probably not going to be a popular comment and I accept that in advance but WTF is the need to have your two toddlers and your dog to go 'wheeling in the middle of nowhere?

Not entirely sure of the back story, but I know I've brought my wife and kids on both wheeling trips I was on. To me, it's a family past time, and one that both my kids and my wife really enjoy doing. Granted, it does suck if something goes wrong on the trail, but that's why you make sure you're with a group, and don't go off by yourselves.

Not sure if you noticed, but they didn't have an accident off road, they had it on the road. This was a case of the 4runner driver following too close and not paying attention.

I am a father, yes, however I disagree that an accident like this happens out of the blue because I can't think of a single public road that offers random sink holes which I would almost not see as a result of me looking everywhere but my direction of travel.

Thing is I see two at-faults here with both drivers not looking where they are going.

I can appreciate the family aspect of it but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I highly doubt a couple of toddlers are enjoying themselves as much as the adults were in that group. Much like bringing toddlers to, say, Disney. Sure, the kids will have fun but it's nothing more than a result of moments in time rather the the trip as a whole.

Was it an area that is maintained by the state/ town/ a friendly volunteer/ etc? Your statement is a stretch, at best.

I stand by my earlier comment as I will never see the neccessity of taking a 2yr old into the middle of the mountains because I want to believe they are enjoying themselves the same way I am.

That said, I'm willing to agree to disagree on this one, boys.

I agree to disagree. But I guarantee you will see more accidents like this on any main road than you will see like this one. People get rearended every day. And yes, I know of many, many main roads, side streets, etc. that have sink holes like this one. They are on the news constantly!! And much bigger than this one. I would feel alot safer having my children with me while I was out wheeling than I would driving down any public street. But as you said, lets just agree to disagree.

I'd also have to agree to disagree, as my oldest daughter (now 4, but was 2 when I first took her out wheeling), loves going for a drive with my 4Runner! :)

On both wheeling trips I went on locally, we went with a bunch of Jeepers and some Samurai guys. We were going through streams, climbing rock faces, and driving down old hydro access roads. My eldest, still asks me to take her out there, and my youngest, usually just sleeps through it all! lol! They both love this truck, and even help me wash it! HA HA HA!

Not all kids are the same though, but I can honestly say, mine are definitely wheelers at heart!

BTW, my oldest girl has been able to spot ANY Jeep or 4Runner from a distance since she was 2 years old! lol!

A public road may not have sink holes, but it has far more hazards requiring far more driver diligence. I have come upon everything from appliances, to a giant turtle, to a pile of snakes, to a refrigerator falling off a truck in front of me, all on public maintained roads (not remote ones either). A sink hole is a cake walk compared to the things I see on highly traveled roads all the time. Shoot, here in MA we have hot shot staties that run into interstate traffic to point at people to pull them over for speeding.

The toddlers may not savor it the way you would, but do you just leave your kids every time you want to do something they won't enjoy that much? I don't have kids, but my general impression is that parents need to stay with their kids, and in fact want to do things they love with their kids.

I am fine agreeing to disagree, but this wasn't a wheeling accident. Road hazards are everywhere, and that accident was 100% the 4runner driver's fault. You have to stay far enough behind someone to stop if they slam on the brakes, no matter where you are. I say that as someone who has rear ended someone before; it was my fault even though they slammed on the brakes for no reason.

I say pack up the kids, throw away their video games and drive straight out into the wild. I am glad my parents did, though we never went wheeling.

MANIFEST DESTINY!

It was a tough decision but I will not be bringing my daughter with me when I go racing in a couple weeks, if that's what you're asking. It's a 10hr drive one way and I'd rather have her outside and/ or playing around at a family member's house rather than me being selfish and strapping her into the truck just for the sake of having her there....and selfish is exactly what it would be if I did not choose to draw that line where I have.

I love my daughter dearly. I love her enough to know the difference between her health and safety and my selfish enjoyment of her presence.

Ok, you are being a bit overdramatic now. Obviously she can't race with you, and I wasn't talking about a 10 hour drive each way to get there. This was a weekend camping and wheeling trip for them, couple hour drive; the kind of thing a family would do together. The purpose of a race is to compete and win personal glory, the purpose of a camping trip is to have fun with friends and family, they are apples and oranges. If he had rolled his LC going over rock obstacles with his kids inside, I would 100% agree with you, but that isn't even close to what happened here.

You guys haven't been to Mexico. Iv seen a 2wd first gen with 3 adults in the front seats and 2 toddlers then there were 5 or 6 more kids/adults in the bed, driving on the skinny skinny 2 lane "highway" dodging cows, goats, drunks and crater size holes were pavement has disappeared. Even jumping draw bridges

Think too hard about the little things then everyone starts fighting

I dont think a pot hole is going to damage you or your child? mmk?

I dont know.

Oh, well if we are going there, I have seen a family of 7 on one little moped bike, none with helmets. In asia you see babies of all ages bungee corded to the rear rack of motorbikes all the time.

Shoot, try flying some of the african airlines... That's a whole new level of scary.

Reading this thread has led me to conclude:

1) the young kids should not be in the vehicle if you are doing any agressive wheeling. I define aggressive as when the suspension goes to full flex or the vehicle is on two wheels. Basically anything dangerous. If you rolled the car and the childred were hurt then you would (in my opinion) be criminally liable.

2) assuming it is simple wheeling & camping (eg fire roads) then the kids are going to benefit a lot more from those trips than if they had stayed home glued to the TV or iPad.

Non parent here.

I think brianemc2_42 nailed it.

We keep enough stuff in the Runner that we could live in it for two weeks, anyway, so the worst thing that happens is an unexpected camping trip (if we get stuck or break down).

The best thing is that they see lots of nature, aren't at much risk of car accidents, and probably see wildlife (we've seen moose, porcupines, deer, eagles, just about everything but a bear so far).

Going 110kmph on the major highways with transfer trucks is what scares me--at least we never have to do that in a Yaris.

Agree 100%. I hated it when my parents took us on drives through the mountains in CO, but now looking back on it, I think I will want to do the exact same thing when I have kids. And that exposure to mountains really cemented in me that the mountains are home. I didn't realize the impression that it left on me until I left CO. I am really glad my parents made me go.

Yeah, I watch out for trucks, but at least out here in the east, I am much more worried about idiot oblivious drivers, especially on my motorcycle. I think the danger from bad drivers is at the top of the pareto chart for danger on the road or off.

To Brian's point though, and ultimately bergs' as well, being an idiot off road with kids is just as bad as on.
