I hope there's enough interest because I want to do it too. I would need at least 20 people to be in on it for the price, effort, etc., to be worth it. just waiting for everyone to receive theirs and give me some feedback as to whether or not they'd want one too.

Gonna make a thread for it and I'll link it in this thread.
 
I received mine the other day but have not had a chance to open and look at it yet and the roof rack is coming off to get re powder coated before the winter so it'll be a week or two before I get it mounted but I will post pictures when I do.
 
Anyone with a 5th Gen put this together yet?
I'm curious if it's possible to mount it high enough on the rack to be able to open the rear hatch....
Anyone with pics?

I have a 5th gen and I did pick one up but I won't be mounting it for another week or two but I will post pictures. I'm trying to get it up high enough to so the rear hatch clears too.

Not sure if you can mount it high enough for the rear hatch to open. I know a couple 5th gens have theirs mounted already, maybe they'll chime in with concrete info. The rear hatch does open a bit further up from the roof line, if I recall...

Awning is not so easily assembled alone. Took me almost an hour alone to figure it our from scratch. Think I could do it in about 20 minutes the second time around. Not quite a "pop out, hang out and be back on the road in minutes" awning.

Can you provide any more info on steps to setup. Not specific, but maybe 5 general steps or so? What is the most difficult? Are all the pieces stored together in a bag or such on outside of vehicle? Or do some pieces have to be stored separate, like inside the vehicle? Last, can the tailgate be opened with the awning deployed, particularly clear the one pole closest to the tailgate in your pics? I know the gate will hit the ceiling fabric, but I would like to have the gate open and just limit the opening height with a strap, assuming it clears the pole.

Sorry if these are silly questions, but I am just not familiar with awnings. Thanks!

Not silly questions at all. The difficulty is in holding up the framework while putting it together. The awning when swung out does not sit horizontal without support and sags down without the poles which are inserted separately. A helping hand would go a long way.

Everything is stored in the shell bag on the car, however the vertical poles and the horizontal bars around the outside edge of the whole awning are stored in a separate bag which first inside the main carrying case on the car.

The tailgate can be opened, but this is going to heavily rely on how far back you can mount the awning. You want it slid back as far as your rack will allow you, so that last bit gives shade past your car not over your car and give enough space to open the tailgate. As you mentioned, it is still limited to the height it will open.

Simple instructions -

Unzip bag, pull out bag with poles and tie down ropes. unbuckle the awing cloth and slide the first pizza slice out. The poles going directly to the center of the awning are attached to the car onto the car with a swivel. So those you never have to take off or on. don't worry about those.

This is the tricky part, you have to connect the horizontal bar to the veritical bar at each corner, and then pull the awning cloth over the corner, do that for every corner. its hard because you have to balance the framework while you do it.

I might be the only one but did anyone else see this in the back of the manual or test this out? Kinda concerns me as much as I drive on the Interstate

Some guys from tacomaworld.com are using straps around the bag. Apparently the cover is oversized and flops around at highway speeds. 4 straps around the cover to tighten it up.
