Frame Rot!! Is this the end?

I'm fairly pleased. While there are some spots, they are mainly in hard to wire brush spots and I blame myself for less than perfect application. I am irritated by how rusted the LBJs are--I didn't treat them BECAUSE THEY WERE BRAND NEW. Now they are the most rusted pieces underneath the truck.
I think I am proudest of the diff. I bet some people would have told me to junk it.

Hey man, I'm about to embark on a similar journey, any sage advice you want hand down?It's been two years since I completed this labor of love. Two NJ salt filled winters. I did no further prep or treatment since I put her back on the road. Today I decided to climb under there with a camera and see how the POR15 was holding up.

If i had to do I'd buy a used 2 post lift off CL. $1000 is well worth it & it's def a tool you'll use again & again.

frame swap debate
ive been debating on looking into a frame swap on my 97, it is rusting behind the front body mounts. I don't really put many miles on mine, and after seeing the amount of work you put into yours, I think ill just plate mine. your runner looks nice and worth the money, mines just a beater. Your pictures helped me make my decision. Thanks!

What's your method? I used used motor oil a couple years ago and it has definitely worked well looking at the frame now. Fluid Film does cling better, but I think that in terms of cost the used oil is just as effective if you plan on filling the frame rails with some sort of oil. More open areas benefit from the FF. Neither product gets along well with rubber bushings so be careful where you spray.
Also start paying attention to the body. I saw the corner of the front door jambs building up with dirt. Once cleaned I saw rust blisters that hadn't yet turned into holes. Filled it with FF but they require regular cleaning regardless. I'm seeing way too many 3rd gens with rotted lower front fenders. Also, the rear bumper step can be removed to get better access to the inside of the bumper for coating too. I'm sure you've already gone through a chrome rear bumper by now.

I haven't decided yet. Agree on the body. I am also getting rust at the front end of rear wheel wells at the bottom. Gonna hit that with POR-15 and also the POR-15 filler putty which looks good but I have not used.

The rust will be in between the pinch weld. There is a tiny tiny hole in the bottom of the pinch weld which will just allow a plastic paint sprayer straw in. I sprayed eastwood frame paint up there.
Edit: changed pinch valve to pinch weld. I have pinch valves on my mind...

The dogleg area. Common spot on damn near any vehicle. 2/3 of my 4Runners are trashed in this spot on one side. I’ve accepted no bodywork for some time so I got up in there with some Fluid Film with the holes in the rocker. Be careful how much you spray. Kolelt reported that if you spray too much then the drains can block and fill with water. Something to think about when using a paint or high viscosity oil. Fogging oil is another consideration.

I went through and read the whole thread. Wow I am impressed with the work you did. 9 years later and your post is still the best...
I got a 98 4runner 5 speed about a year ago. Previous owner didn't maintain it well. I put in hours and hours of work into this thing to get back to normal (somewhat)
I started with the interior. Replaced everything from A - Z.
Then I did the front suspension..
I am now doing the reae suspension but waiting on more parts to arrive.
Next, I will be doing the frame.
I know it would have made more sense if I did the frame prior to any suspension work but didn't really see how bad the frame was until I tried to wire wheel it.
Checking with you to see if you have seen an easier method to get the frame out. I do not have a lift nor do I have access to one.
