Fresh Paint

Recently Purchased my 98' 4runner.
Had it up on my lift this past weekend to have a gander. Sway bars rods rusted off. Front shocks are rusting.
I work as shipping/Receiving Coordinator for a blast and paint yard. So i have the means of getting things bare metal painted. I want to repaint my Sway bar while i have it out.
Here's my question. What else can go? Bumper and rims of course...if i only had a rear.

What u mean if you had a rear ? You should grind down any rust on frame/welds/mounts where you can reach and properly prep it and paint it !!! Shocks are not worries as you will probably replace them down the road.

X2 use metal etching primer as well after you remove rust. it bonds to the metal.

On anything i can remove while i have it on the lift i was going to use a Zinc Rich Epoxy with a coat of epoxy and a coat of High solids Urethane. Thats what they use in the plant. I figure if its good enough to sit on pipe in a chemical plant for 30 years it should be good....?
I was really asking what you guys would take off given the opportunity. And yes. Shocks are next on the list.
If i had my way I would take the whole body off and do the frame. But for now im just going to do the accesable

Kolet, No. As i said before. I work at a Blast and paint yard. We paint pipe that goes into the Plant's. Perk of the job, i can usually get the painters to blast and paint stuff for me. We get it by the 5 gallon buckets around here.

Sounds fantastic!

Pull all the skids, maybe the hitch, panhard bar, brake calipers, rear drums... really, anything you can comfortably yank off, why not?

Be sure to mind the threads and bolt locations, but worse case scenario you just have to repunch the holes with a drill bit and run a tap to clean out any painted threads. If you're feeling froggy, pull the entire rear axle housing and do that too.

My only opinion, please don't do it some obnoxious color. :spit:

We mainly use Carboline product. But we can get anything.
Im thinking Carbomastic 15 prime
890 Carboguard intermediate
134 Carbothane Finish

That's the same system used on bridge steel and that lasts 30-50 years so it should work well. I wish I had access to that as there is a ton of stuff I'd like to paint like my hitch which is the worst looking part of the truck. I thought about powder coating it again but what's the point when it came powder coated and only lasted about 2 years.

Was your truck always in Texas, because that amount of rust is unusual for down there?
One VERY common place these trucks rust is inside the frame, specifically in front of the rear axle lower control arm mounts where they are welded on the frame. Look at the bottom of the frame, right next to the muffler. Take a ballpein hammer or a hammer and punch and tap the area right in front of the mount, on the bottom and on the inside, working forward to the rear cross member. Hopefully you wont go through the frame. How's the rear dif housing look? That's another weak area for rust. Good luck!

No, After searching for 2 years i finally found Her in Oklahoma. The owner bought it from up north, New york i believe. 170,000 and yes. She is rusty. Rear axle was replaced so it looks decent. I looked into what it would take to remove the body a little. A bit much i think. But worth it. I have a shop with 2 car lifts and enough tools to make any wrench head happy. Just looking for a buddy to do it all with. Wife doesn't get too interested in my kind of projects. Anyone in Texas That needs some fresh paint let me know. i dont do much auto finish...but if its mills that will last your life time. I got it!

Oh man.. don't do that! :crybaby:

It's just personal preference on my part. I have never been into having anything from under the vehicle stand out too much. I like it all black and inconspicuous under the body. Plus, I see far too many trucks driving around with brightly colored suspension components and such, and it just screams "City Bubba" to me. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because I've always had an affinity for sleeper cars and bikes. All go with little show...

But hey, if you want it safety yellow, it's your truck. Do as you see fit! Just make sure to post some pictures.

Started off with just my spare rear axle. As soon as i figure out how to post some pics i will do so. Looking like i have to set up a photobook account or something. Not to into Social Media sites though.
