FreshSeaBass's Build Thread

I went through your build a couple of times! Super clean! I am pretty mechanically inclined. I've sorted out the nitty gritty for the 4x4 4cyl transmission, it's the V6 Trans conversion that would require some serious work.

Cool man! Thanks... she's been my project for 13 years... and still finding things to do to it!

I'm interested to see what else you do with this truck!

As of now the Manual Hubs are about the most exciting thing to date. I guess the biggest thing is getting some power out of the 3rz, they are bullet proof *knock on wood* *knock on the 4Runner*, so I have started a separate fund purely for something that will give me more (Useable) power and torque which is my biggest goal. I want to maintain fuel economy on top of all of that! It's a big undertaking, but in the last two years i have invested in HD valve springs and a shim kit along with ARP head studs. I could be wrong, but that in itself could handle a generous little boost in power. I wish to retain the OEM-ness of this truck as it is a single-owner vehicle that my father first purchased. S/C vs Turbo; I am undecided and I only have $600 in savings towards that, and college limits any progress whatsoever.

Needless to say, all rambling aside, thank you for the recognition it is pretty scarce unless you're one of the big names and you definitely fall into that category, MUCH appreciated fightman80 :peace:

Southern Appalachia is a Toyota goldmine. A good friend was keeping his eye out for a brother and he helped me score a $100 e-locker axle housing and I finally received confirmation that my front E-locker will soon make its way to the US of A all the way from Aussieland. Here is a picture of the last peice I needed for my e locker conversion! Harness is ready to go and the 4.56 OEM E-locker will be installed once College let's out! It's the little things in life

Hey, read your whole build. Quality work!! Interested in this EAton e-locker deal. Do they make one for the rear axle? (What model Prato are 3rd hens closest to)? I don't want to re-gear, so a e-locker might be a good option. Thanks in advance

Thanks for the props!

Consider these before an E-locker for the front!
Tire size, gear ratio, and manual vs ADD hubs

Harrop Eaton makes E-lockers for front and rear. The 4runner actually is a sister to the Toyota Hilux Surf. The Prado would be the sister to the Lexus Lx/Gx otherwise known as the Land Cruiser. The best option for most people will be a Detroit TruTrac LSD, but I just finished rebuilding/rebooting some Tundra CV's to run these coilovers on a Long Travel setup in the future. I only want to setup my front diff once so, I will wheel with 4wd and a rear locker once the front is installed and only use the front locker if it is pertinent. They are an Aussie brand as you probably read and they are readily available in most countries outside the US. I recently drove a vehicle with the Harrop F/R E-locker's and they worked flawlessly. I am originally from Colombia so there are plenty of Prado's and Hilux's around. Most of my family members drive older Hilux'a
:worthless ....
Pictures to tease a bit:
IMG_3782.jpg There's one picture of our beaten up little '40. When I say beaten up, that's compared to some of the mint '40s here in Colombia.

Thanks for the reply!! Cool rigs. I'm jealous of all the other Toyota options people have outside of the states. I'd love a diesel 4x4 toyota! Anyway thanks again. I already have an arb as a front locker, and nothing in the rear. I'm just trying to figure out if the electric locker you mentioned might work for my rear diff. If I try and source a used yota elocker, then chances are I'll have to re-gear. I could go arb rear, but I was wondering if this electric locker might be a little less expensive. Thanks man!

About to hit 300k! It's time for tires and thank the Lord for 15" rims because 35s are about to be super affordable. Thankfully I got rid of the cable winch line and now run a synthetic line. Rebuilding the 4cyl 4x4 donor transmission for the transplant. *Fingers crossed* Low range Off-road package should be showing up with the remaining parts for the e-locker retrofit. Update on LIFE, 4Runner, etc.

It has been way too long since my last update on here...
- 4Runner is retired from DD duty
- 4wd Conversion done FINALLY: W59 4x4 + FROR Twin Stick
- Need to rebuild steering knuckles and manual hubs
- I am no longer a huge fan of BFG KM2's (Cooper ST MAXX FTW)
- Shared shop space and tons of room/time to play with stuff
- I have yet to take it out on a 4wheel driving trip... going on 6 years now!

Anyone know what's up with not being able to upload photos to the forum??

Photos of the fun this winter

So far, on the swap... the transfer case had come apart something like 4 times because of issues with the interlock pin. Getting the twin-sticks was worth it but it was a PAIN. The pilot bearing was kind of seized up in the crank housing on the back of the motor, and I sacrificed a socket extension to get it out and replace the clutch. New aisin clutch and flywheel totally sweet! FROR frame mounts and my welding has improved dramatically.

My good mate paul enjoying the creature comforts of working in his own engine bay unhindered.

Third time's the charm

Last one for tonight... needed to make up for the lack of activity over the last little while. Going to get back to staying involved. Anyone feel like the 3rd gen community is sort of dwindling?

On another note: Here is the transmission all done up, crossmember mounted, painted, and being roughed in to the frame before having been welded on. It feels super solid, but I know I will be going dual cases, so I am going to have to wait for a dual case adapter until then!

Cooper ST MAXX compared to the BFG KM2... No comparison! :focus:

Currently

Here is a photo from early spring... This is essentially where we are at. The roof rack is almost done and I have some hardwood to get started on a storage solution. The main criteria for the storage solution are: Adaptable space, minimal interference between spaces, and a relatively lightweight package. There will be a compromise somewhere, but we will cross that road when we get to refining some sort of design work.

chop chop chop

Over the weekend I decided to start chopping and get working on a design I have had in my head for a while.

The fun kind of maintenance

Spindle gussets, repainted the UCA's, new bushes/sleeves/ and a beastly EMF Rebuildable Uniball which was nerveracking.

IMG_20200517_175832.jpg

Will update on the design, but over a day I think I have worked the dimensions out and have a pretty complete design

Progress

Over the weekend I got some parts cut out and well... IMG_20200526_215123.jpg IMG_20200526_215127.jpg

The new towers are tacked and mocked up.
23558-c246083dde8903088875bd57c07a5073.jpg23559-fcaa9a81e43ae400989707ad392f578d.jpg

Here you can see where we are at. Resi fittings need to be clocked 90 degrees.
Limit strap bracket is welded and Opt offroad CAM deletes are in too!
IMG_20200526_224816.jpgIMG_20200526_232131.jpg

I need to make some clearance revisions and make a change to the tab depth, but overall. This is going well!

Did you ever finish that front coil bucket project? Seems relatively straight forward and worth it if you can pull 11-12” travel rather than $5k in a LT kit for 13” travel

I did as a matter of fact, I've been absent from this forum for a while, but I've been driving it for the last two years after doing the conversion and the towers.

Did it make a difference with how much travel you got or handling? How do you like it?

It has made a significant difference with shock tuning. I'm able to run a much longer coilover and as a result, I am not sitting so deep in the travel. Re-valving allows me to make it a bit more of a progressive tune to have a supple feel on road and lots of bottom out resistance.

As far as offroad, I get as much articulation from the stock IFS geometry as you can squeeze out.
