From MR2 to 4R

Just made the move from IN to PA. Weather is very bad here(the town was voted 2nd worst weather in the country) so i knew id needed a 4x4. I had 2 MR2s (a 89 and a 91) so no doubt i was going to get another Toyota. Thought it was kinda ugly at first, but it quickly grew on me. As I do miss the power and tearing up some curves, but I've learned how much off roading can be. Its gonna be hard not to heavly mod it. Has anybody droped a 3s (turbo MR2 motor) in a 4R?

Not that I've heard of. I think you'd have to get snazzy with a bell housing adapter to run a 4wd trans/transfer case, or shell out the cash for a divorced case.

What kind of power do they MR2 engines make? I know they're what you're used to, but there may be way better options in terms of engine swaps...

Mine on race gas made 294 hp and 304 tq. The all trac's are awd and use the same motor.

No hits on Yotatech or here, looks like you'd be breaking new ground. Does the AWD setup have a singlespeed transfer case, or does it use a center clutch? Which side does the driveshaft drop on?

An AWD first gen would definitely be original... I don't think it'd perform as well as a 4WD in the rocks, but it might kick ass on sand!

i highly doubt ill go crazy like that but it was just an idea. And as for all the tcase questions.... well i dont have a clue lol. this is gonna sound dumb but what does a locker do? im new to all the off roading stuff.

3s motor I think its been done but they rather go with the 7mgte..
Lockers provide more traction read up on them you have many different types of lockers spool full time limited slip etc etc

When a differential "feels" one wheel spinning faster than the other, it sends all the power to that wheel. That's great for turning corners on pavement, but not so hot in a low traction situation or if you lift one wheel in the air, both common when you're off-roading. A locker tells the differential to mind it's own business and transmits power to each wheel 50/50, no matter what. There's lots of types of lockers, each has it's pros and cons. If you're just getting into offroading, I wouldn't worry about it yet. Get on the trail with some guys who know what they're doing, watch peoples builds on-line, ask lots of questions.

Thanks youre a big help! Im new to this area and know nobody lol. ik a lot of people off road here. i need to find some 4R in the area. Anybody in the North PA area?

I previously had a couple AE86 Corolla's and an '86 Celica that I was building up a 3S-GTE for (never finished it tho) and I agree with you...I too miss the handling and speed of them but off-roading is so much fun too.

I wouldn't go with a 3S engine in a off-roading vehicle given they should be mounted at a 14 degree angle (I believe it's 14) for proper oil drainage in the head. Personally; I would probably go with a 7M swap like another member mentioned.

is your's a 3.0 or 22r or 22re? If it's a 3.0 it's pretty simple to do a 3.4L swap and then you can turbo or super charge and add other mods. The 3.4L mounts right up and if you have a manual the bellhousings are the same ( i think automatics are different but dont quote me) 3.4L puts 190Hp and 210 Ft-Lbs stock. It's not 300 but with some mods you could get it up there. just my .02

It was an Australian delivered non turbo, I think they called it the "Bathurst". Sweet car I do miss being able to fly round the corners :)

The NA actually outpeformed the turbos on a recent run through the mountains simply because they had to watch their turbo lag and didnt want to spin out, and it outperformed the AW11's due to their brakes overheating on the downhill!

I had a friend that took the N/A motor(10:1) and boosted it put it on e85 and made 450hp
