I have just gotten a check up on my 91 t4r. Mechanic told me that my fron axles are bad and need to be replaced. Alson when the car is in 4WD, when I make a sharp turn its sounds like something is rattling around. If anyone has any insight on this problem please help

Sounds like your front CV joint (axles) is bad. Typically when the outer boot rips on a CV axle, the grease is thrown out and dirt and water begin to collect within the inner bearings. The axle joint then becomes bad and that is when you begin to hear the so called "ratcheting" sound when making a turn. It's common on front wheel drive vehicles which explains why you hear it only in 4wd.

If you're mechanically inclined, it is pretty easy to replace. On front wheel drive vehicles, it is just a matter of removing the hub assembly and popping out the the axle with a pry bar. Although I'm going to warn you that it can be a bit difficult to remove the center axle nut. It's usually between 28 - 32mm and can be a PITA to break loose. Anyway, good luck.

Hello Gilles,
I'm sorry to hear about the axle problems. I'm curious as to the maintenance history of your truck.
Have you owned this 4Runner since new? How many miles on it? Do you know if all the recommended maintenance service was done on the truck?
I hope you can get it fixed without too much expense.

Best regards,

JP

They are easy to replace yourself, if you have basic skills.

they are like $65 each with the core(old ones) and about 1hr of your time.

Btw these are comman to go up. I replaced my passenger side last winter and the drivers the year before.
