Front end clunk

Ok so my 05 Sport has a front end clunk I can’t seem to chase down I was pretty sure it was my ball joints cause they were pretty trashed however I replaced all 4 of them and no such luck. It’s also has new sway bar bushings and end links and new front axles. I am honestly thinking it’s the struts cause it has 198k miles on them. Anything else I am not thinking about?

Struts? Upper ball joints?

Struts are the only thing I can think since I replaced all the ball joints if they were non xreas I would have replaced them. I am curious to see what others who xreas shocks and struts have to say about their life span.

I had 193k on my XREAS when i removed them. They didn't leak or have issues of any kind.

When you did your balljoints did you do the entire arm or just joints? I would suspect control arm bushings or potentially body mounts.

Get under there with a prybar and go HAM.

Good luck!

I did the ball joints yesterday and I just did the joints because all the bushing were in good shape. The shocks and struts seem fine considering the mileage and they still have good rebound and dampening. They also aren’t leaking at all and that’s why I was thinking my clunk was ball joints since all 4 were absolutely destroyed. I just bought it a few weeks ago and got a good deal because it has some issues which I am trying to get under wraps before I start towing my camper with it.

Hey i'm in a similar boat. 05 v8 drivers side front has a clunk going over bumps, sounds like 2 metal washers hitting against each other. So far drivers side UCA has a leaking ball joint so i suspect its that since its only drivers side with the leak and sound. I already replaced front shocks with bilstein + Moog FJ coils, front Sway bar mounting brackets & new bushings/ front sway bar end links. I will be replacing my UCA with JBA in the near future hopefully and i have OEM LCA package held up in the states heading to me in Canada and will be replacing those hopefully no more noise.

Replacing the whole arm is the way to go the uppers were super easy the lowers were a pain. Also I would be prepared to buy the seal for the inside of the hubs both mine were trashed. Toyota ones run $40 each the Napa ones are like $15. I may just bite the bullet and replace the xreas with standard struts and shocks. My clunking did get quieter after my new ball joints but it’s still there and kinda loud.

yeah the UCA im just saving up a bit for the JBA since shipping to Canada is so expensive hopefully is resolves the clunk. Which seals are you talking about? The LCA i think ill have to replace my caster bolts since they might be seized. i might just have a shop do the LCA install if im too lazy.

Double check the sway bar end links and make sure they're tight. It's easy for them to come loose. Don't just feel them, actually try to tighten the nuts up again.
I chased a clunk for a while that was just a loose nut.

52 ft-lbs at the attachment points if I remember correctly.

I hit all of my bolts with PB Blaster for a few days before I did the ball joints to make sure they all came out ok and it seemed to do the trick.

It’s the seal on the axle side of the hub where the axle slides into the hub. It seals the backside of the wheel bearing to keep dirt and road grime out both of mine were completely shot.

so these bad seals could be causing the clunk as well?..
@ OP. you could remove the sway bar entirely and see if the clunk is gone, am having the same annoying clunk, and thats what i intend to do next

I removed mine to see if the harshness over big speed bumps/steps on my Dobinsons up front would be lessened. It sorta did but I think I'm just not used to the higher spring rate/harder dampening - the back is butter.

No these seals are just in the hub to keep stuff out of the wheel bearings.

Yeah I might pull off the sway bar tomorrow and see if it goes away but it has new endlinks and bushings so I am honestly thinking it’s not the issue.

So removed the sway bay, clunk reduced, but i still have some annoying squeaks and clangs on uneven roads. guess next stop would be to replace the LCAS and UCA.....arrrggghhh

Check your upper ball joints, place a long bar under the bushing area of the control arm but on top of the ball joint and push down and see if the joint moves, there shouldn't be any movement.
