Front Recovery Point Interest Thread

The 5th Gen recovery points on mine looks like it goes through the box and out the backside. I do have the welds around the round bar where it enters the box and exits on the back side of the box.

No fear mongering, just providing an upgraded solution. Just like 75% of what we bolt on our rigs.


You're right, it was a 120 platform, either a FJ, 4th gen, prado, or GX. The design on the 5th gen is the same though. I've attached a pic of a 5thgen for reference.

I honestly forgot exactly what it looks like....I just knew there was something different in that pic and I've looked at them before and noted there was no way they would fail under a recovery. I need to go look. My mistake.. the design could be similar. I would have to see them side by side... but pretty sure some of the other platforms were much weaker. I have a 120 and a 150 so will report back after I look.

I will say... the big issue with the factory ones is how you can bash down on them.. that will weaken them over time... the issue is not the initial strength.. but the location and the fatigue that could occur after many hard hits.... although I still doubt most would wheel that hard in the first place...

Correct, same design as 06-09 120 series rigs.

Yes wfo, that's another issue with oem.

I love the idea, I might even spring for the group buy, but $150 is way too steep.

I can buy these... for less than $9 each.....Tow Hook W/hardware

And that was just one quick Google search....with some real effort I bet they are even cheaper, like $5 at 4wheelparts.com



PS. I guess I'm just a cheap b@stard.

Thats like slapping a $50 basket to your OEM crossbars, will it hold stuff? Sure. Is it the same as your $1600 Gobi? Hardly.

Good question, I haven't looked to see, but I bet I can find a suitable spot.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of something custom made. it's just the price, like I said, I'm cheap. I have the same issue with battery trays that cost $125

Yikes, the price must have gone up...I got it for way less than that. (Group Buy - sold the OEM rack for a pretty penny)

I recognize this picture of my vehicle! It's changed a bit since then though. Different front skid plate and different tires now.
 
Most aftermarket bumpers will tie in right there....


I don't understand the need for this... The factory tow hooks are 100% adequate for any recovery.. just low and this is basically the same spot...

Your product looks great and of high quality! However I was thinking the exact same thing as wfo9..... I dont see much upgrade from factory other than bling factor. Again, the product itself looks very nice.
 
What are those bolt sizes/ratings? I'd trust the 150 platform's hooks that go through both sides of the cross member and are welded over 8.8 metric bolts in single sheer any day.

I've got an aftermarket bumper with 1/2" steel shackle mounts, but if I were being pulled out from being mired, I would probably choose the OEM hooks
 
Another thing to remember is rarely should you be pulled out with an abrupt jerk. Sure, sometimes it's necessary, but if you need to get some crazy running start to pull someone out and apply the kind of force necessary to break off a recovery hook you should have stopped and reassessed the situation. Maybe getting out a shovel and digging out around the tires, frame or bumper to make the recovery easier is necessary.
 
I had someone share this photo with me on instagram right after posting my 4th gen points. Don't have any backstory, but it is a factory tie down that broke at the weld on the frame. No bueno.

The main thing I notice about this picture is that there is no bridle being used. This is pretty basic recovery technique so this picture isn't an accurate depiction of how factory recovery points should be utilized.

With that said, I'd like to know what the rating for the factory recovery points actually is and what the working load limit of your recovery points is while installed. I know ARB makes them for a reason but they also extensively test them and have them rated at 17,500lbs at an angled pull. I want to know that something like this has serious R and D behind it before trusting my rig or life with it.

Not trying to be that guy but these are things that people should be asking.

Using a bridle is a technique that should be used in nearly all recoveries anyway (I recommend the use of one even with these), so yes that compounds the issue in the picture.

Testing is initially done in solidworks with a 3D rendering before being sent to the metal shop to be cut. After being cut, the point is moved to a facility here in Houston that does load testing and certification for the marine and oilfield industry. They test mooring lines for container ships, 400 ton bow shackles, oilfield rigging, etc. They hook everything up in a sled, and start pulling. All testing is done to ATSM E4 standards.

Load testing on the vehicle would be a whole different animal, there are entirely too many variables that open up a lot of liability. For example, someone in the Northeast vs the Southwest. Corrosion on frame rails is a big deal, if I advertise as "working load while installed on a vehicle" it could be vastly different for a brand new 2017 model in Arizona vs a 2010 in New Hampshire with 150k miles.
 
I'm interested but I would want to know more about your testing? You are using ASTM-E4, so axial force on a machine? How are you testing off-axis forces? Do you have FEA for forces from off-axis?
