Front Recovery Point

Are there any reasonable priced front recovery points for the 5th gen? It doesn't seem like many options exist, but maybe I'm missing something. I'm only familiar with the option from Apex Overland, but the price seems high at $165.

Anybody else with a stock bumper come up with a solution here? Something that is bolt on would be ideal, I don't have a welder.

Dang, must be a good demand for them.

I bought mine about a year ago, under $130 shipped. They are rock-solid though, I'd probably pay the price if I were to just now stumble on them.
 
I just put a set of the Apex recovery points on my "new" 2012 Trail last weekend. They are freaking solid! :D

The Apex units look great. I have used the built in recovery points with no problems a few times. I would be concerned about doing a strong yank recovery and the Apex may be better there.

Last time I was helped by an '84 4Runner

You already have some welded on. Price is free. And they work pretty well. Paint them red and you can double the strength...
 
Please don't use what the above poster is mentioning. This is NOT a place to cheap out.

Apex is the way to go here, otherwise spend another $600 and get a hybrid bumper. you're call but don't cheap out or use the tie down loops, please.

Ive heard many people online saying dont use the tie downs but have also been told by many cal4wd and ufwda instructors that it works just fine for the many times they have used it. Bridle + welded tie down points have worked well for me for the times ive needed a tug. Your call

I'd love to get a hybrid bumper, but I have a Limited so also would need to find a SR5/Trail bumper beforehand. Been hoping one would pop up, maybe eventually I'll get lucky.

This is the one area of armchair engineering on this forum that drives me bonkers.
This is not a place for prying by pulling in any other plane than directly against the plane of the bolts.

They could be 2" thick and the condition would remain the same.

The loops are fine. They are better than fine.
Add a bridle between the two and they are even better.

Front hoops would break at around 28,000lb of force. I don't foresee exceeding that for my use anytime soon.

I think anyone with much experience in the field will tell you the same thing. They're perfectly adequate for vehicle recovery. In a bit of an ironic outcome I'd guess the bolt on recovery points are the least used recovery points of all. They're almost exclusively installed on vehicles that will never use them.

This is a place where you should consider material properties and statics, not internet hype. The hoops are perfectly fine. (.24in * 58,000lb)(2) = 27,840lb Combine both with a bridle (overkill) and it's 55,680lb breaking strength. Do you plan on exceeding 50,000lb of force on them? If not - use them for what Toyota engineered them for. If you do - I'm curious how you intend to do it.
 
How was the install? Did you have to drop the strut bar? I have these in a box just haven't gotten around to installing yet

Its pretty easy, took me about 30 minutes.

-Dropped the skid
-Unbolted sway bar
-Unbolted the small hose brackets that the top bolt uses
-Got the points roughly in position and attached loosely using the lower M12 bolts
-Reattached small hose brackets through the point
-Reinstall sway bar (hardest part, easiest to get one bolt started so its holding itself up then get the second one)
-Tighten everything down
-Install LFD wide skid instead of wimpy factory one. ;)

I was told that Toyota engineered them as tie down points and NOT recovery points. :shrug:
 
You were told wrong.

Well, I trust my source. We can leave it at that. I'm not here to argue.

Either way though, its not an expensive mod in the grand scheme of mods, and adding reinforcement to something that can see high force levels during recovery can't hurt. I've spent way more money on way more useless mods in the past.
