Front Runner Slimline II 3/4 Rack

Im thinking of ordering this roof rack. I had a full length rack for my 100 series land cruiser and the quality is exceptional. The only concern is that it is 3/4 in length and they are not planning to make a full length one due to:

"At this time we do not offer a full length rack for the 4Runner. There are no mounting holes forward of the sunroof. In order to properly secure a full length rack you would need to drill into the roof of the vehicle. Extending the rack forward without properly securing will cause extra wind noise, chattering, decreased load capacity, and even damage to the rack or roof. "

Now this makes perfect sense to me, however how do the Baja, Gobi and Drabbit roof racks solve this problem?

Also what do you guys think of the look of this 3/4 length? Thanks

That's not a bad looking rack. The Baja, and as far as I know the Gobi and Drabbit racks all make use of adjustable height forward feet with thick rubber pads to seat against the roof sheet metal. They use the 4 factory mounting positions with the forward feet simply being used to support the forward part of the rack. If I recall correctly Baja also makes a flat rack similar to the Slimline that is intended for RTT use. And their prices are competitive with the Slimline.

that price is nuts for that.... I 2nd a bajarack. Gobi is my preference if you have the patience

BUT I DO LIKE THE LOOK OF IT!!!!

I have been talking to them about this rack since August, and then they go and release just the 3/4 version about a month ago... what a disappointment.

I was debating on just buying the full rack, the mount for the 3/4 rack and making a custom front support, like Gobi does. or even buying the Gobi front support mount and adjusting it to front runner.

Yes it is a true disappointment. Their quality is so good and they got the best selection of accessories
 
Slimline II on 2014 TE

Just finished my Slimline II install yesterday!

Nothing disappointing about it for me. I didn't want a rack covering the moonroof, and I don't like to store a lot of stuff up there. 3/4th is what I wanted.

Nice, I agree 3/4 if you have a sunroof. I think the 2014 width of the factory bars is different than the 2010-2013. Did that issue come up, or did it mount up to the factory locations?
 
That actually looks pretty good. I see you got the stainless steel table also.
Do you have enough room to mount it underneath the roof rack with the front runner table rails and clear the shark fin? Thanks

Yes, all good! The table loads/pulls out of the side, so there's plenty of room. One could also delete the shark fin and install the rails in the back.

The ability to eliminate the table fron the interior is a great pro!
What size table did you get? And last question is what kind of attachment did you get from them if not the table slides?

I wonder if 3/4 roof rack would be long enough to support a fox wing awning...
 
I bought the larger of the two tables. I figured - why not?

And I did indeed buy the storage slide that you linked to. They mount in either direction.

The length of awning was the one thing making me consider a longer rack. For now I'm going to rig something up with Tyvek.

I think if you get a lighter awning and really space out the two attatchments there is only a foot and a bit hanging off...might even be ok. I might try it out

Yes, I have installed it. super easy, as always perfect craftsmanship and the bigger table fits no problems! Im very happy with it. Also installed my roof top tent on it! happy camping!!

One thing is that a bag of bolts was missing when the rack was shipped. To finish installation I went to local hardware store and picked them up for like $15 dollars but they started to rust, so I email frontrunner, got the response right away and they shipped the missing bag which arrived within a week (international shipping) FOR FREE! Im super happy with customer service and infrastructure. I have also purchased the bigger stainless steel table which folds nicely between the rack and the roof and a full set of cutlery for camping, again superb quality. I should mention this is my second rack from them, previous rig also had jerry cans and jerry cans holders, axe mount etc etc. All products have exceeded my expectations. Yes some things might cost more but you get what you pay for.

Has anyone who installed the rack experienced noise issue? Im not sure if it is because I have the tent up there or because there is tent and the stainless steel table hidden but my on speeds of 60mph + the whistling sound is there and I have to close my sunroof and slide the solid carpeted section also.
This means no sunroof for me in the summer on the highway, that being said I never open it anyways because of the bugs we have in Alberta which bounce off the roof top tent wall right into the interior lol

Anyways, anyone with noise issues and resolutions to this?
Some kind of deflector that I can mount?

No whistling here with just the Front Runner fairing. I pulled the Thule fairing off late last week to try the Front Runner fairing and its a lot quieter at any speed. I would think the Thule would be better but at 75mph it made a lot more noise than the Front Runner set up. Also as an added bonus it takes up a lot less real estate up top.
Have you tried it without the table? I am guessing that might be causing the whistle you are hearing. That or maybe stuff a strip of foam pipe insulation between the table and the rack and see if it goes away. Any way just some ideas hope this helps.
