Front speaker pods in a 1990 4-Runner

Hello all,

I just came into ownership of a 1990 4-Runner ( yay! ) and I am in the process of putting in a sound system to replace the stock unit.

Pics as soon as the weather clears up, I promise.

I removed the dash panels to see what I was dealing with and I was shocked to see that the front 4" speakers are screwed directly into the soft, easy to rumble plastic dash underpanels. On top of that, there are only two screw holes ( heh, "screw holes" ) to use per speaker.

Can anyone suggest a more robust way to install speakers in the frontend of the 1990 'Runner ?

Here is what I am going to try, first here is the passenger's side speaker well/pod/hole/holder/captain's chair.

And here is I did to it, poor thing.

The idea is that this gives me a more sturdy surface to mount the speaker on, also is does a better job of separating air volumes between the cab and the back of the dash. You have to imagine this with a hole in it for the speaker of course.

Alpines are getting in tomorrow, I hope there is still enough clearance to install them.

For continuity's sake

Not much feedback but I guess '90 runners are not the mainstay for audio upgrades these days.

Here are the ongoing adventures of the 4" front speakers installation.

And here is the complete set-up.

The baffle is securely held onto the dash by multiple screws and the speaker has its four mounting points on a solid surface insted of two shaky plastic stubs.

And to wrap things up

The dash panel snapped right back into place even with the added depth of the plywood, so thats good. Driver's side was a bit more problematic as there is a bit more plumbing down there, I can post some pics of that too if someone wants to see.
