Front suspension clunking - low speed

I have a '98 V6 LTD with new LBJs, front struts, springs, stab bar links, LCA bushings, steering rack bushings at 60k miles ago. No leaks or tears on the CV boots. Stock original TRE's.

At 20-25 mph when shifting center of gravity from left to center, or when going over very mild bumps (think asphalt patches), I get a mild clunk. Nothing feels loose, but it's a fairly consistent occurrence. This is in 2HI mode.

After putting it on a lift, none of the areas I looked at were rattling or had loose bolts...except when I grabbed and shook the CV axle. It was loose and made a sounds close to what I was experiencing.

Based on some of the threads I've read, I'm not sure whether this is an imminent problem or not, at least not until I go into 4HI or 4LOW. I recently shifted into 4HI, with no unusual or concerning noises or vibrations.

I read the thread on needle bearings and how that might be the cause, but would like to know if bad CV axles is an immediate concern for greater damage to other parts.

Also, looking for what the "progression of worn parts" list might look like if I've got to start budgeting for parts.

I had a similar clunk that sounded like it was coming from the front but it was the drive shaft hitting the gas tank skid. It only happened on sharp right turns though.

OP, please do me a favor. And make sure your sway bar links are TIGHT. Especially the area where it boots to LCA.

That or steering rack is loose/rubber is needing replacement. Kits are available for that. :cowboy:

Sway bar links did not appear loosened from when I installed them. Steering rack bushings were replaced recently as well and tightened to spec torque settings. Which leads me back to CV axles. Especially when I and my mechanic helper both physically pushed/pulled on the CV axle and it had about 1/4" play.
Any thoughts on long-term wear on that part due to simple normal road impact would be appreciated.

It is not going to get any better with time. If the play in the joint is more than is acceptable replace it.
