Front turn signal LED resistor question

Hello all!

Been searching and reading alot of forum over the last few days but have not found exactly what I'm looking for so I wanted to pose a question here in regards to installing resistors for the front turn signals when switching to LED bulbs.

I picked up the Diode Dynamics Tail and Turn kit and their HP24 LED Front Turn signal switchbacks w/resistor kit. I have installed the Tail as turn in the rear with no problem but for the front, Im having a hard time finding good 4runner specific instructions. Has anyone here done this mod and have pics of which wires need to be tapped into with the vampire clips? Seen some vids on Youtube but again not specific to the 5th gen T4R. Never really messed with any of the wiring before this so want to make sure I have everything in order before I go out and try and install these.

Driver side you tap into the yellow and black-striped wires. Passenger side you tap into the blue and white-striped wires.

EDIT: You actually reignited me wanting to put in LED turn signals so I just finished the install. I tried it once before but it was such a pain considering how tight the space is where you're working in. Hope your install went alright.

Post #4 is correct. It's a pain to get your arm up in there, but it only took me about 20 minutes or so to complete. Totally worth it IMO. Good luck

Thanks for all the help, i tackled this one last night. As you guys said it was a pain cause it was not easy to access but the results are worth it. Also did the DRL disable mod so that my LED high beams are off and these new switchbacks stay on.

Do the front and rear signals run on the same circuit?

I came across the VLEDS resistors that can run one for each bulb or run 2 (front and rear).

Thanks for all the help, i tackled this one last night. As you guys said it was a pain cause it was not easy to access but the results are worth it. Also did the DRL disable mod so that my LED high beams are off and these new switchbacks stay on.

how do you get the switchbacks to stay on?

The "turn signal" bulb (switchback LED now) comes on when you have the DRL's on. Normally this would be lit up orange when your DRLs are on...I disabled the high beams lights from coming on when in DRL mode since i have LED bulbs that do not dim like the OEM halogen bulb so this was done to avoid having my brights on anytime my DRL's are active.

They do not. You need 4 resistors in total to replace all turn signals with LEDs. I don't know what sorcery VLED has but I had to run resistors at each signal.

The install wasn't too bad. Still a PIA considering the small amount of work space. The most difficult part for me was using the pliers to make the connection.

They definitely do work in the turn signal bulb slot without additional wiring. (There are 3 wires that go to each bulb. Driver side has yellow, green, and white-striped. Cant remember passenger colors) I was mainly curious if they turned on in DRL mode versus the next mode up. I guess I answered my own question looking at my amber-only LEDs. They don't turn on when I'm in DRL but when I'm in the mode after DRL, only part of LED bulb illuminates. When the turn signal is activated, the remaining parts of the bulb illuminate.

I had trouble with this as well, even though I understood the concept of the load resistor, I had trouble applying that to my 4Runner. I ended up doing a write up, first of failures, then once I had more time to play with it, again at what got it working.

In short I ended up installing a 3-ohm resistor on each side, but only on the front wiring. It added enough load that resistors weren't required for the rear. I'm very happy with how the wiring came out, although it was pretty time consuming to do it this way. But I know for a fact the truck can take a beating and I don't have to worry about any of those cheap little plastic connectors coming loose or getting water in them, because I refused to use the things! I didn't have to cut factory wiring either, see my install for details!

Interesting install not going the traditional vampire connection route. I find it strange that some people get hyperflash with only one end having resistors installed and some don't. I bought the Diode Dynamics tail-as-turn module and it came with 6-ohm resistors so I added 6-ohm resistors to the front as well. Good write-up, by the way.

Disabling DRL

Hey, thanks for this post - I have been searching for days to find this info! I just bought the DD switchback LEDs and am waiting for weather to clear up to install.

Just to clarify - The white DRL function of these are on when the 'DRL' light setting is on, correct? It doesn't have to be on the parking light setting?

Also, could you link me or describe how to disable the high beam DRL? I've been looking for this as well and when you mentioned you did it I am eager to find out how!

It requires you to bend one of the fuse tabs, you can always buy another one should you want to replace it back to having DRLs.

Awesome, right after I posted on this thread I found that one. I am still scared to bend that but I guess you can always buy another (for a fairly hefty price). Thanks for your help. Now to find what paint to use for my chrome accent pieces...
