I had all four calipers replaced under warranty around 95,000 miles because they were starting to seize.
did the dealer look at the brakes before anyone else or did another shop diagnose it first? I still have a few months left on my plat warranty and want them replaced if I do find them to be defective.
It was only the dealer that looked at them. I brought it in because I was having excessive brake ledal travel and dimished braking power.

Just replaced my front pads and rotors over the weekend, 100k miles and the calipers were just fine. My old pads had perfectly even wear and I was easily able to compress the calipers to get the news pads on. Although the inside of the caliper pistons was quite rusty and filled with crud. Hopefully im good for another 100k.
it's good to hear some people have had better luck with the calipers... i'm going to get my pads replaced for the first time at 65k miles and i'm hoping theyre not seized.
How to prevent it? I assume its mostly caused by road salt in the north east. Its hard all all cars here, but it seems to impact the 4Runners more than others....at least the calipers anyway. If you can avoid New England in the winter, you should be all set. If not, its just a matter of time. You could flush your brake fluid more than normal, but I think that just buys time. I'm just hoping that if enough people in the northeast let Toyota (or the NHTSA) know about the issue, they'll help us out. Save your receipts.
Luckily some of us haven't been bit by that snake yet...
Can you give me some tips on how to P R E V E N T this from happening?
