Fuel Filter Help Please

I've got the new fuel filter hooked up. I can't get it to stop leaking. It's leaking from the front of the filter. I can't get the filter nut any tighter and I'm starting to round off the edges of it. Any suggestions?

How bad is it leaking and are you using a line wrench?

It's a pretty steady leak. Yes, I'm using a line wrench. I took the filter back off and inspected the fuel lines. I'm not sure if I just didn't get a good seal between the line and the mating surface of the filter or what.

You should be able to almost feel the flare of the fuel line mate up with the filter. Try it again. Any rust on the line connectors?

Are you using OEM filter from the dealership? I just did mine and I literally had to unscrew and retry 5 or 6 times. I put quite a bit of force to screw down. I think I unscrewed the mounting bolts a little bit so I could mat the line to the filter better. It was a pain to get to not leak.

Yeah, the filter is OEM. I got the filter back on, but now have another issue. I can't get the truck to start. I turn the key and all it does is make a clicking noise. It doesn't even attempt to turn over. The battery is brand new. ??? I'm afraid I'm just going to have to have it towed to the shop.

The only thing i can think of would be air stuck in the system but that hard to do almost, press the bleeder valve in the engine bay and check for fuel to come out or air one.

Actually, you need to use TWO line wrenches, one on the flare nut and one on the body of the filter. That doubles the effective torque when you push one and pull the other.

Agreed, I assumed he was using two. I only used a line wrench on the flare nut and a normal one on the body of the filter. But yes you need to use two.

Did you mess with anything else? Did you disconnect the battery when you were changing the filter?

Ok, so a buddy of mine came over to help out. He tried hooking up the new filter two more times and we still couldn't keep it from leaking. So just for sh*t's and giggles, we put the old filter back in and NO LEAKS. We're both of the opinion that the new filter is bad. I guess that's possible? He also had to knock on the starter with a hammer while I turned the key just to get the truck to start. So I guess the starter needs to be replaced too. What a day.

This might be a bit of a stretch, but did you by chance secure the filter to the frame *before* tightening down both lines? If you did, there might be stress near the fittings and the line may not be aligned, causing your leak. The filter itself has a bracket that is adjustable. What you want to do is loosen that bracket on the filter, tighten both lines, align the bracket to the hole in the frame, secure the bracket to the frame, then tighten the bracket onto the filter housing. This will avoid all stress at the fittings.
