Fuel filter recommendations

I was wondering, what fuel filters would be recommended besides the OEM. filters?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say there probably isn't going to be a better fuel filter than the OEM Toyota filter. You usually can't go wrong with OEM but maybe somebody will chime in and prove me wrong.

My local dealer wants 50 bucks for one. To me that’s a little steep. I did see one on Amazon for 37.50. Those I worry are fakes.

How about WIX? I’ve never heard a bad thing about them?

I'm not Normally a Kool-Aid pusher, and it's a dang fuel filter... metal can stuffed with paper, not exactly a complex mechanical component. You have to decide for yourself...

I replaced my original-install 1999 filter just the other day. I'm fine with OEM that'll go 20 years and 200k miles. Probably Won't do that, but overkill is fine as that difference in money isn't a big deal to me.

I used OEM as a purist but on a budget I would not hesitate to use Wix. They are a top notch filter company. Sometimes you’ll find the OEM things like this have more precise locating tabs and stuff while the aftermarket units may be a bit less specialized to fit.

Wix makes a lot of the filters for OEM companies anyways(Gm, Harley Davidson, etc...), can’t go wrong with them. I use the Wix filters for all of my vehicles. OE Toyota is fine too

I had a previous owner change a fuel filter and which ever one they used wouldn't even fit in the bracket. :-( [ they had a zip tie holding it in because the bolt would not work]

Pokeyman likes Wix will fit in the bracket. :-} [not a bad aftermarket choice at all]

Like Brian stated the part number was correct and come with the bracket.

So i would be cautions as some of the aftermarkets filters will not fit in the fuel filter bracket. :-(

Just replaced the fuel filter on my 02 w 200k, 1st time that it had been done. Used an OEM filter and it was very easy as it had a new bracket already with it. Two nuts to take off, after loosening the fuel lines and then an easy swap.

I had previously used an aftermarket fuel filter on my 97 and had to reuse the original bracket, which was a pain as it had 210k miles on it and 20 years of road funk/rust

$30 is well worth peace of mind for me.

I guess everyone is different, but for such a small savings, why use aftermarket? The clear cut choice to me is to use an OEM fuel filter and try to save money somewhere else in your life if money is tight. Don't buy your Starbucks triple mocha latte for a couple days. Eat at home instead of going out to eat. In my opinion, the peace of mind you're buying by going with OEM is worth it. We know OEM fuel filters can give you 100's of thousand trouble-free miles. Will the Wix or other aftermarket filter do the same? Nobody probably knows because they haven't been able to put 200-300k on a Wix or other aftermarket fuel filter. Go with the proven OEM filter and call it a day.

at 145k I used a Bosch filter. At 200k I put in a Toyota filter. Not that it needed to be replaced, I was doing new knock sensors, remaned injectors, and a list of other things ( all fluids, filters,plugs wires,vcg's etc) so did the fuel filter too.

Ive used Bosch and Mahle filters in many cars and no issue with install

I have heard a lot of good about wix filters over the years, and I think that if that was available I would not hesitate.

For how much the OEM charges, yes it's worth it to just go with a Wix. This is a pretty simple part and there's really nothing special about the OEM vs aftermarket. I actually really like my Motorcraft branded fuel filter...very high quality and it's painted to protect against rust.

Toyota has a diverse supply chain to support its business operations. In Japan, Toyota buys directly from 200 component suppliers. Based on data from Toyota's headquarters, the 200 suppliers account for 2 billion units of which 150,000 types are purchased monthly.

Kyosan Denki is a Denso Group member, hell the 3.4 got ND and NGK plugs ..fuel filter isn't super special.

Or you can do what toyota recommends and not replace it. They are supposed to be lifetime filters.

lifetime meaning like 10-15 years or so. I think spending $20-$40 and replacing it is a good call on a rig like mine with 215k miles... even if the only real benefit is the satisfaction of wrenching and having my engine bay have one less rusty old part in it
