Fuel filter replacment

My problem was'nt leaking fuel, the PO didn't bolt the bracket to the filter or the framerail. Had to get 2 wrenches, (19mm & 14mm IIRC) to break the fittings loose. Other than that, & snaking the filter past the obstructions, is should be a 15min job.

I finally got around to doing this also on my 3vze. It wasnt bolted to the frame at all, just suspended there by the 2 fuel lines so yeah, needed 2 wrenches to loosen it, then the one to unscrew it fully.

The lines were then running about a 1/2 inch "inside" the fuel filter on each end. Had to twist and almost bend the fuel lines to get the filter out.

Installation back the other way was the same thing, bit of a PITA as I wasnt keen on breaking or bending the fuel lines. Eventually got it back in and works good so far.

There were two coppper washers in the packaging I couldnt figure out where to put them, or they wouldnt fit. I noticed someone who did this on a 22RE used the washers, I didnt. The filter I pulled off didnt have any washers in it either.

I got my filter at the local Canadian Tire for $18.20. just your standard filter from toyota. I tried to loosen the lines leading to the filter but they will not budge. The truck is an 89 with 214,000 on it now with the filter never been changed, got any ideas as to what i can use to get the rust loose from the threads. Ive used what i have here to try and get them to loosen but there is no go, Anyone got any ideas? maybe some good old GUNK will work

Yeah the filter box and the haines guide tells you to disconnect the fuel pump power cable and then run the engine until it runs out of fuel. Wouldnt that involve lowering the fuel tank? Can you just disconnect a fuse or relay soemwhere to have the same effect?

if you look under your vehicle if you have a 4runner like mine the wire is located just behind the right side of the rear axle and above the gas tank ( very visible ) there should be 2 plugs one for the sensor and one for the pump. if you cannot figure it out which one is the sensor or the pump just start the vehicle and disconnnect both plugs, your vehicle should now cut out. I would soak it with some sort of penetrating oil,like gunk, a few times for a couple days. I have attemp this when the ground dries up a bit.

Thanks! i soaked it a couple of days in a row now. its pretty warm here in calgary now +8 tomorrow, i will attempt it then, hopefully it works

my original fuel line to the filter was cut on both ends. an the guy i bought it from ran rubber hoses to both sides an had a totally different filter thank god i have friends that work at car shops to help fix dumb things like that

I soaked it in PB Blaster and was able to get it off without too much trouble. I ended up just letting the fuel spill out, didnt bother disconnecting the fuel pump or running the lines dry, not that much fuel comes out.

Any idea where the filter is on the 2004 4Runner?
The chilton manual makes NO mention of a fuel filter.

most new cars dont run fuel filters anymore. well they do and its just a sock type filter that on the pump it self in the gas tank

Does anybody have any pictures or videos of a fuel filter replacement? Mine don't seem to be too rusted but the bolts will not come loose. It would probably help if i had smaller wrenches...
