Fuel filter replacment

I am going to change my fuel filter out sometime soon, Waiting on a nice Sat. or Sun.

If you want I will take pic.s along the way and post them for anyone that wants to replace there fuel filter in the future.

GOOD ID. I,ve got to do mine too ,Some pics would help alot. Whats the change out time, on fuel filters?

Fuel filter part # 23300-65020 90-95 fuel injected 3.0L cost list at $37.74

estimated time: 1 hour at the most

Tools you need

1. something to catch the fuel in
2.saftey glasses(you don't want fuel in your eye's)
3. 14mm open box wrench
4. 12mm socket and ratchet with extensions
5. socket swivel(to reach the top 12mm bolt that holds the filter on)

Make sure your truck is completly cooled down before you start.

OK first wear cloths you don't mind getting fuel on.

1. raise the front of your truck up or park on a slope like I did.

2. Slowly loosen the (nearest to the gas tank) 14mm fuel line going into your fuel filter. You will only be able to turn the wrench 1/4 of a turn. let the fuel drip into your catch pan, losen more and more untill no more fuel drips out and then losen completly.the threads are about 3/4 in. long so be patient.( takes about 10 mins.)

3. next loosen the front(nearest to the engine) 14mm fuel line going into the fuel filter, you should have little to no fuel spilage at all. again the threads are 3/4in. so be patient.

4. Next loosen the top 12mm bolt holding your fuel filter on. This is the bolt you will need the socket swivel and extension for.
then losen the botom 12mm bolt.

5. Remove the fuel filter from the top, be careful as some fuel that is trapped in the fuel filter will come out.

6. Put your new fuel filter in the through the top.

7. I first put my 2 12mm bolts that hold the fuel filter on first loosely, then carefully threaded the 14mm fuel lines on the new fuel filter front and back ( you should be able to tighten on finger tight).

8. now go back and tighten the 2 12mm bolts. Now go back and finish tighting the 14mm fuel lines.

9. Crank your engine ( may take a couple of seconds for the engine to start) and check for leaks.

I would change every 60K or so.

If it has not been done on your truck ever or not recently you will notice not so much a HP increase but a much improved throtle response.

you can do it, just do as I say and take your time.

BTW the filter cost list is $37.74

The pics don't come up for me, is anyone else having this problem? My 4runner's got 138,000 miles and REALLY needs this done, fuel delivery sucks, especially at low RPM's!

I really wanna do this myself but the pics dont work for me anymore.
I know its a 5 year old thread, can anyone help me out?

Also Ive got a full 93 4runner Service Manual and a 95 service manual I cant for the life of my find the fuel filter reaplcement. The 93 manual goes through eerything from the fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel pressure reg, injectors, everything BUT the bloody filter. 8)

The OP gives a pretty good description of what needs to be done (AFAIK, I have not worked on a 3VZ ever). What do you need the pictures for, not sure where the filter is located? Me either. Would be easy to find by following the fuel line from tank to engine compartment. One thing I noticed is that he never mentioned the torque value for the banjo bolts, but then again maybe the V6 doesn't have a set torque for fuel filter banjo bolts. Shadetrees like to say "Tight is tight!"

I had a look around today and am pretty sure I found it. Just under the passenger side door, attached to the frame.
Its a black cylinder looking thing.

you are correct. but be carefull those are solid lines you dont want to break em.

Wow, for once I am jealous of the V6, that actually sounds like you can get to it without being a double jointed gymnast.

No you can't, without seeing this thread I just did mine this afternoon, & it was a major PITA! The pass torsion bar & parking brake cables are in the way.

It can & should be done, but soak the fittings w/ some PB Blaster, & please bolt it back on so the next owner won't have to go through what I did.:dammit:

I wonder if it is easier to relocate it, next fuel filter I replace on one of my 22R motors is getting relocated to the inner fender for sure.

it helps if you remove the gas tank cap 1st. let the pressure out of the system before you change the filter out

Yeah the filter box and the haines guide tells you to disconnect the fuel pump power cable and then run the engine until it runs out of fuel. Wouldnt that involve lowering the fuel tank? Can you just disconnect a fuse or relay soemwhere to have the same effect?

2 ways i would do it.

lazy way, remove gas cap than go under the truck and change out fuel filter

2nd would be pulling the fuse for it (not sure if there is one just for fuel pump) if there is do that and start truck till it dies. than change fuel filter out.

if there is not a fuse for just the pump than i would just do the lazy way. its ok if a little fuel leaks out. reason to remove cap is to get rid of the pressure in the tank, that way when you remove the lines it dont spray out instead it just leaks out
