Fuel gauge/sending unit issues

My fuel gauge never reads less than about a quarter tank, even when bone dry empty (ask me how I know that ). Now its getting worse as I ran out the other day and the needle was above the 1/4 left line. I checked the specs and the sending unit sends out 4Ω when full it should send out about 110Ω when empty. So reading always too full means it could be sending out LOWER than expected Ω readings. SO, I suspect its is not the sending unit as corrosion should mean MORE resistance, not less, but I will trace the wire and see if I can read it with a multimeter.

Than means that, if the wiring and the output of the rheostat in the sending unit check out, I should at least suspect the gauge. Anyone have these off and know if its a removable needle that I can just shift to the correct spot?

Corrosion doesn’t kill the sending unit, it just wears out. The info in this post may be helpful, in particular the video linked at the end (not my vid but looks at this issue In comprehensive detail). Also happy to answer any questions you have as best I can.

pull the tank, fuel pump, its attached to the fuel pump, replace and your good to go, mount everything back on. you'll move likely see the connection were the needle measures nice and corrodded. had to do it on my previous 4runner.

not saying this is the solution to your issue since the needle wouldn't just move/slip by itself if you didn't take the cluster apart, but I can confirm that both the coolant and gas needles can be "adjusted" up or down. When doing my recent led conversation I mistakenly placed the needle too high so both my fuel level and engine temp were off by almost 1/4". Had dial it down a bit to get it to read correctly.

Watched the video. I need to check the resistance of the existing sending unit as the resistance INCREASES as the tank gets empty so I have the opposite probelm that the video has. I keep running OUT of gas with it showing a 1/4 tank or more remaining. i am showing way MORE gas than I actually have. The video guy was always reading less gas than he had.

If it really is only a few hours to drop the tank it would probably be worth it to just see if I have something foreign in the tank, sediment, clog etc.....
