Fuel injector install help needed

My fuel injector nightmare:

The plan for this morning was to R & R the driver's side fuel injectors but I decided to remove the whole rail from all 6 injectors. The left side came off clean but the right side not so much. #3's base broke in the hole and I needed to pull out the base with needle nose pliers. #5 however came out without the o-ring. How does that happen? I attached a 1/4" clear hose to my shop vac and fished around in both intake runners for quite a while but nothing came out. The valves look closed but I won't know for sure until I remove the valve cover. Is this a huge issue? How in the world didn't it have an O-ring? Could it have come off years ago or is it more likely that someone did #5 and forgot to install it? I guess my choice is to pull the intake or hope it blows out or already did blow out.

Any suggestions would be appreciated while I zip over to the parts store for 3 more injectors.

Wow! Never had that happen when removing mine.... all 5 times! I can't really offer much advice on how to retrieve/look for the missing o-ring..... but I would ask if you made sure to twist each injector as you pulled up on the fuel rail?

Did you unbolt the hard line on the one side, so you wouldn't pull both the same time?? I wish you luck my friend... injectors at the parts stores around here are worth a good $190.00 each for remanufactured ones.... sounds like you're injector job got really expensive quick!

Good luck with the rest of the work, and I hope someone else chimes in on the missing o-ring issue...

After running the vacuum in all the injector holes I needed a few more o-rings. I'm just glad I bought 3 injectors earlier. Who knew so much could go wrong. I'm going to assume that a little o-ring will get burned up and spit out fairly easily and just hope for the best.

To answer the question, no I forgot to twist them before lifting. Some came out of the top and some from the bottom and #3 broke, How I don't know. So the new ones went in 2,4 & 6 and the old ones that were working before whent in 1,3 & 5 with new o-rings all slathered with vaseline. When I tried to open the banjo bolt, it wouldn't budge. Oh well.

I gotta tell ya, those valve covers aren't a cake walk either. Cleaning all the FIPG off and prepping is very time consuming.

So Once the FIPG dries and I do a once over on the vac lines, etc. I'll fire her up and see what happens.

Correction form my 1st post, I was wrong. The #5 intake valve was open. I had a 1 in 6 chance of getting the only lost o-ring in the only cylinder with open intake valves. Guess what I'm going to do tonight?

Play the Lottery baby. I beat the odds. LOL

* Could the o-ring have been missing before? Would the lower o-ring even be missed if it wasn't there? Although not ideal, the seat would seal the intake runner, right?

did you try grabbing a flash light to see if its just stuck in the intake, where it would be if the injector was there?

I used a flashlight but its a small opening and I had a hard time seeing through the hole. Its also a smooth bore and there was no evidence of the old o-ring either where it would be or down below in the runners.

I decided against pulling the intake especially if it may have fallen into the cylinder. Now we're talking pulling the head. We'll just let the combustion process take care of it.

I fired her up this morning and cleared the old codes. There no signs of fuel leaking and idles at 750 rpm once its warm. If something goes wrong, I'll update the thread but I'm assuming its done.

Thanks for your input.
:lookout:
