Fuel Injector Type

I already have an 89 Toyota Pickup that's practically new but I just purchased a 95 4Runner in great condition from the original owner. It has about 200 thou miles. The only problem with it was that with a cold start, the gas pedal needs to be pressed in order to keep it running just enough to idle at 1000 rpms for about a minute. Then it idles down to where it should be without having to give it gas. I've had it about five months now and I've noticed a very small leak. It's coming from the valve covers on the back corner. It leaks down and begins to smoke. I'm changing the valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, other gaskets etc. while I have the plenum removed. I want to change the fuel injectors as well. I've noticed that there are two types of fuel injectors offered for this model. A top feed and an MFI. I know what the acronym stands for but how do I tell which one fits my vehicle? Are they interchangeable or can I only use the one type that is in there now? Thanks for any assistance. I'm hoping that replacing some of these inexpensive parts with new ones and doing some cleaning will remedy the rough cold start idle. The injectors will be the most expensive parts that I will be purchasing.

I was also reading the repair manual and replacing the injectors seems to be the most tedious and difficult job. :brick:

With it acting like that during starting you may want to look into a cold start injector. My 86 22RE does the same thing, but with the price of the cold start injector being around $150, ill just live with it being a little difficult to start.

I can't help you on the type of injectors you need, but instead of buying new ones, get them professionally taken apart and cleaned. Last time I had a set done was in the girlfriends jeep (Jeeps long gone thank god) and it cost me around $120 for all six. It will be much cheaper and they will work like new. :cowboy:

I'm thinking the cold start injector (or anything else in the cold start system side, which might not be anything else).

One thing that would mostly help you decide would be if a warm engine, shut off for a bit, has this problem. Or if you start a cold engine, turn it off, and then start it again. Basically I'm thinking the other option is if your fuel line isn't pressurized enough, which these things might tell you.

Over on a 3000gt board there was a guy offering to clean injectors for free. Those factory ones were something like $180 each, so it could have been well worth it if you could do without your injectors for a while. Personally, depending on how in depth the replacement is, I'd consider getting one (the cold start injector) at pick-n-pull for $8....but I haven't looked to see if one of rock auto's supliers has one for a reasonable price.
