So i cant figure out why, but My 4runner bone stock+ rook rack only gets average 15.4 MPG and its about even between highway and city. I have 245/75/16 Destinations on it right now and CANNOT seem to get any better fuel milage? It Runs great and I love it, just did an oil change this past weekend in between breaks from bumper build. Hopefully finishing the rest of welding on bumper and then finally installing the lift this coming weekend. But back to fuel mileage, does anybody have any suggestions?

That doesn't sound too abnormal, I average just about the same, if I'm on the highway more, then I get close to 16. I have snowboard racks on mine and 265 tires. 4runners aren't the best on gas that's for sure. Maybe tuck your mirrors?? Idk lol

HAHAHAHA the only reason I wrote this thread is because in someones build thread they were talking about getting around 21MPG with 32"s and Im like where the heck is my 21 MPG?
21 with 32s?? What the hell my Focus ST gets barely better than that. I don't know how they can manage that. I might have to try the old mirror trick and see if I'll improve haha

Thats what Im Thinkin! Even if it was just HWY I still need to figure how in the world hes getting that. I was just hoping I wasnt a blacksheep with my 15 MPG lol
:lmao:

I get about 17/18 with my 33's and body lift. (Body lift "supposedly" makes mileage worse"). So I would say start with a general tune up? Spark plugs, Spark plug wires, Clean your air filter? Get a new air filter? clean your throttle body? Run some lucas fuel injector cleaner? Don't be so heavy on the foot? (ALTHOUGH I myself am a lead foot). Also check your tire pressure.

I get somewhere around 12mpg on all town driving, when i do go up on the hwy it goes up to like 18.
Have a heavy foot ,and i dont get much praise for my patience.
all service is good,3000 mile oil changes, plugs, wires, air filter, fuel service all done.

I definitely don't have 32s, but I do routinely get 20.5-22 mpg when I'm driving all interstate and am keeping her at or around 70 MPH. Much more than 70 and the MPGs will go down dramatically.

Try resetting the ECU. Check the most recent thread which is in the process of collecting all known tips and tricks to improve fuel mileage. The ECU reset is listed there and I have a post in there with a link to how I do it.

Cheers.

Thanks everybody for the responses. I'm going to spend the majority of my day doing all the tips in the posted thread! I'll give response on the next tank of gas

Are you guy's running ethanol? If you are that's probably the reason for the low mpg's. I can still get clear regular and get 20+ mpg on a good day.

Best way to help your Runner get better mileage is to go back to the basics. Plugs, wires, air filter, clean the MAF and throttle body, PCV valve and any other small things like lubing the U-joints. Small things can add up to a drastic drain on your MPG's.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I'm getting a little over 20mpg on a combined tank in the mtns with 265/75/r16 Duratracs. I've also got a 5-speed which might help.

I've been managing between 20-21 on hwy and 16-17 city. Bone stock with ski racks on top.

It's tough to get consistent calculations here is Oregon since we legally can't pump out own gas and sometimes I don't think I get topped off all the way, so I could look like I'm getting better than I actually am.
