Fully Enabled Nav Functionality!

I would imagine the same would work for the 4Runner just cut the speed wire. I'm in no way saying that this will work on the 4Runner just that it may be an option. I have a pdf copy of the nav. wiring diagram that shows which wire it is if anyone is interested the problem is its 268kb and the upload limit is 136.7kb.

I was having a good day until you reminded me about how much Nissan sucks with their nav system :) -- it is so dumb that I don't have words for it. Anything you do is press for OK - you think that is a distraction or what? Then confirm everything press everything twice it SUCKS

I have said it before my Acura TL 2004 was THE best car I have driven when it comes to technology interface. This includes testing about 35 vehicles in 2008 before we bought our Armada. No it did not have IPOD interface so that part has to be excluded, but everything worked without limitations. I did have to press OK when starting the car, but since everything worked that was much less of an annoyance.

Agreed litigation has led to this

Doesn't the 6th generation Nav on the 4runner work by voice recognition as well? And doesn't the voice recognition work while in motion? I haven't purchased the 2010 4runner yet, but I have an '04 Sienna and it's true, having all the Nav features disabled while in motion is a pain in the neck. But when I visit dealers looking at the 4runner I spend time with the nav manuals in the glove compartment and it seems that you CAN use it while moving using the voice recognition feature?
Any thoughts would be helpful before I make a purchase, Thanks
 
Yes, everything on the Nav seems to work while moving with voice. The only thing I've had to use voice on was while inputting the address - everything else that I use seems to work just fine while moving. It's kind of funny why some companies do this anyway - it is not a safety or legal issue since there are so many other brands that do not disable any feature of Nav while moving (and if it were a regulation then everyone would have to disable, but they don't).

their response to my recent email:

"At this time the 2010 4Runner is not on our approved list of vehicles for any of the lockpicks that we offer. I would check back with us within the next couple months."

i take that to mean that they are working on it... or at least planning to do so. anyone else interested in one, can't hurt to drop them a line.

I may have misunderstood. You said "The only thing I've had to use voice on was while inputting the address". Do you mean that's the only thing voice DOESN'T do? In other words, can you input the address while driving using voice?
 
The only thing I've had to use voice for while moving was to add an address destination. I've been able to use all other functions that I require while moving without using voice. I'm not a heavy user, but this works for me just fine, although I don't see why a few car makers insist on forcing us to us voice for a few items while other brands don't.
 
The big things that are turned off for me that pushed me to get the bypass was:

couldnt access music folders from my harddrive
couldnt access phonebook (can access speed dials though)
Coulnt input POI's

I use those 3 things a lot, especially on long trips like I will be doing next month from San Diego to Seattle.

Keeping it for 10+ years so dropping a few hundred to unlock it all is well worth it IMO.
 
I have a thought based on this entire thread. Although this wouldn't provide the same funtionality as the purchased product, in theory it would unlock the Nav at speed for pennies on the dollar.

There is some type of sensing signal, probably a wire that provides an input to the Nav unit to determine if the vehicle is in motion. My guess is that it's a positive, enabling voltage when stopped. Regardless, if we know which wire this is, we can add a toggle switch in series, mount it in an inconspicuous location and simulate being stopped.

Has anybody tried this? I don't have the technical manual (yet) otherwise I'd have jumped in and started reading. Same idea with the backup camera...a simple in-line switch can simulate reverse.

Yup, this was figured out for 2010 Toyota Nav systems by a guy on some Prius forum. Basically, it required a special waveform signal (not a simple on/off voltage) to work and it could be created for not that much $$$. However, you need to know more than a bit about electrical circuit design to make it happen.

As I have complained before, I don't know why Toyota went to SOOO much trouble to disable nav functionality. Probably just typical overEngineering in response to some stupid corporate lawyer mandate.

Can't stand the voice commands on the navigation - that is my one complaint so far. Prior to purchasing the 4Runner we were looking at an Acura MDX, but it was too small for me; however, I really liked how they designed their voice command system - very fast and easy to use, no need to confirm everything.

Just so I am 100% clear. The module does not turn off the lock on the Nav and keep it off. You have to hit the button everytime you want to access NAV or phone while driving? Is this correct?

Nav works per Toyota. Press new magic button - nav turns off, all functions available, enter address even when moving. Press button again, nav turns back on and takes you where you want to go.

Really it's for my girlfriend when I drive. :girl: and like her, it's worth the expense.
 
You can press it once for it to disable for 5 min and it will turn itself back on (or press it again once done) or you can hold it for a few seconds to stay disabled until pressed again.
 
Does anyone know if the NAV is configurable by the dealer to disable use while in motion. Would think Toyota makes it for the world market and not every country has the restrictions the US has. Bottom line is it configurable, but we just don't know how.
 
considering that some folks have had a hard time even getting the dealer to disable the seatbelt chime, i'd say there's a snowball's chance in hell of their "unlocking" the nav unit — if it is at all possible. :shrug:

I just found this post while doing a search on this forum for Coastaletech, so I figured I'd update this thread. I contacted Coastaletech today about a "lockpick" for the 2010+ 4runners, and they responded with exactly the same response that sandcrawler got. I'm guessing it might be a while before they get around to it. :)

yeah, i email them every few months and always get the same response. really hope they come out with a pick for our nav units; looks like a sharp solution.

in the meantime, the voice command hilarity keeps me entertained. :D
