fuse size question

I want to splice a lightning cable into an add a fuse to have a dedicated charging cable that routes behind the dash and exits near the phone mount, what size amp should I use for this?

It looks like the accessory outlet uses a 15A which seems awfully high to me for charging a phone.

I was thinking a 2 or 3A fuse for this, what say you?

I'm not an electrician and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so this is a stupid idea for whatever reason, please educate me.

Yeah you can't splice the cable, it will need to go through a charger. Read the specs for your charger, size the wire for the load and the fuse for the wire.

I think apple is 30W but I know usbc can be as high as 100W

IPad minis ship with a 12w charger I think, you can use it on an iPhone, it's only going to draw what it can handle. I've charged my iphone with a 60w Anker charger a few times, it works fine.
 
The lightning cable itself is only 5v inside the cable, so directly splicing that in would be a bad idea.

I think you are confusing watts and volts. While you are correct, we are trying to address a voltage problem. Typically most stuff on a car is 12 volts and directly splicing a 3 volt appliance into a 12 volt line will cause it to draw more than it needs and it will definitely burn out.
You can splice into the 12 volt wire but will need a step down transformer like what Senorlechero linked to.

No, I'm not confused. I didn't say anything about volts, it was covered by a previous post, no need to repeat it.
I was simply trying to respond to the comment that apple uses 100w charger, which I don't think is true. The Apple laptop chargers I've seen are 85w, so a phone is going to be way less than that....closer to the ipad mini.

If you're going to splice something in do it right and splice in a 12v powered HUB. That way you can charge multiple devices and those devices can talk to each other. For example if you have a USB connection from a tablet to a ham radio you can plug both into the hub and have them communicate while still providing power to the tablet - which can't happen if you connect them directly to each other.

i said usbc supports up to 100W, I said i think apple uses 30W

from a quick search it looks like apple does in fact use chargers with about 30W for fast charging

30W at 5V = 6A, or about 2.5A at 12V.

36W at 5V ~ 7A or 3A at 12V.

Whatever though you'll need some sort of 12V to 5V transformer (a USB hub is the thing to use). Look at the input specs for that and size the fuse accordingly.
 
Yeah that's adding a usb outlet, you can do that just don't splice a 7sb cable. It's only 3A though, so you won't be able to fast charge.

3A is more than enough for a single usb. 95% of phones and tablets out there use between 1-2.4a

To get anything more than that u have to go with a usb3/C adapter and have a phone that can support that.

which is why i said "yeah" when asked if it would work and only said that you can't fast charge with 3A. and regarding the fuse size simply said, "read the specs for your charger, size the wire for the load and the fuse for the wire"

I can appreciate where you’re coming from, but that would be seriously overkill for what I’m trying to accomplish. I just want to be able to charge a phone without a cable clogging up our interior.

I mounted a Mob Armor magnetic at the top of the radio shroud, to the left of the clock, I just want a lightning cable routed behind the radio surround that exits up there to charge when needed.

I picked up an Amazon Basics braided nylon 3’ cable, some t taps, 1/4” braided loom, cable tie downs and some rubber grommets.

At this point I think I’ll just tap into the existing 12v outlet power and ground lines for this.

I was hoping my 12v to 5v reducer would show up but no luck yet. I’ll get this done soon
